Creators of Peace International

Creators of Peace International CoP is a global network of peace creators Creators of Peace International (CoP) is a global network of peace creators.

It was launched at Caux, Switzerland in 1991 as a international women’s initiative that challenges women everywhere to:
- Share responsibility for their part in the perpetration of conflict and in its resolution
- Engage in the creation of peace at every level of society
- Break the chains of hate and revenge
- Build networks of forgiveness and friendship across racial, religious and social divide

s. BACKGROUND
The Creators of Peace (CoP) initiative was launched in 1991 at the
Initiatives of Change conference centre in Caux, Switzerland by the
Hon. Anna Abdallah Msekwa of Tanzania, a respected politician and
leader of her country’s women’s organizations. In her inaugural speech,
she urged everyone to ‘create peace wherever we are, in our hearts,
our homes, our workplace and our community. We all pretend that
someone else is the stumbling block…Could that someone be myself?’
CoP is now a global network of people working on different continents
through conferences – Caux, Switzerland ’91 and ’94, India 2001 and
Uganda 2005 – and through workshops, personal encounters, community
building activities and Peace Circles. A delegation attended the UN
Women’s Conference in Beijing (1995).

CoP in Sweden 🇸🇪

Last month, six women living in Sweden with roots in Somalia, Liberia, Eritrea and England came together for a weekend of reflection, dialogue and connection to explore how women can create peace within themselves and around them.

In a space of openness and honesty they shared their personal experiences, challenges and triumphs. Through laughter and tears they reflected on how the events of their lives shaped them and those around, and how the trauma we carry needs to be acknowledged and brought into the open so that healing can take place.

Although coming from different backgrounds, they found common ground in their commitment to building peace in their families, communities and society.

We are grateful for the courage, openness and wisdom shared throughout the weekend. Peace begins within each of us and grows through connection with others. ✨🌿

At CoP our mission is transforming, empowering and engaging women in peace creation for all. ✨

Through leadership, compassion and courage women continue to break barriers, heal divisions and build stronger more united societies.

At the heart of lasting peace is the power of women standing together, raising their voices, supporting one another and leading change where it matters most.

As we look ahead to our 35th anniversary gathering this October, we proudly celebrate the women who have carried our vision forward and will continue to carry it over the years to come. ✨

Building a legacy of peace one step at a time. 🌎

Over the past year, Creators of Peace facilitators have been introducing Peace Circles in women’s prisons in Kenya 🇰🇪

Together with the prison welfare department, early outcomes observed were:

• Increased openness in counselling
• Safe spaces for sharing personal experiences
• Reduced conflict among inmates
• Improved behaviour and engagement in rehabilitation

These insights reflect the meaningful difference Peace Circles can make in supporting rehabilitation and fostering more positive prison environments. As this work continues to grow and expand to different facilities in the region, we hope to see its benefits reaching more communities around the world 🌎

"Cultivating cultures of conscience and compassion, contradicting cultures of contempt" are two themes that will be explored at this year's CoP global gathering in Kenya, October 14-17, 2026.

One of the biggest threats to a culture of cohesion is contempt for "the other". A culture of contempt is equivalent to stage 4 in the 10 stages of genocide.

Letlapa, a South African anti-apartheid fighter, said, "We believed in freedom for ourselves but not for others. We resisted white supremacy but carried ethnic supremacy in our hearts...I am now working for a greater 'yes' to our common humanity."

At CoP's 35th Anniversary gathering this October we will be working together towards that greater "yes".

Registration opens soon! Stay tuned.
