The Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN) is an independent, not for profit-making, non-governmental organization established for the promotion of, and respect for the human rights of women and young girls, especially their reproductive and sexual health and rights. Our definition of health is very broad, as such our approach to addressing reproductive health issues are multi-dimensio

nal. The idea for the formation of the Centre was conceived in September 2000. However, it began operations in September 2002. The Centre is registered as a company limited by Guarantee under the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990 (Its Registration No. is RC 497455).

CEWHIN, with support from the Ford Foundation, engaged the Egba Traditional Council of Baales in Abeokuta in an awareness and sensitisation session focused on preventing violence against women and girls.

The Egba Traditional Council leaders initiated the session as part of their commitment to sharing knowledge gained through CEWHIN’s series of town hall meetings, consultative forums, and capacity-building sessions. This demonstrates the growing ownership of violence prevention efforts among traditional leaders and their willingness to take the conversation beyond our workshops into their communities.

Through open discussions and shared commitments, the Baales explored practical ways to raise awareness, challenge harmful practices, speak out against violence, and promote positive standards within their communities. This session reflects an important shift from learning to action.

We will continue to work with traditional and community leaders to prevent violence against women and girls.

With support from the Ford Foundation, CEWHIN brought faith leaders together under the Partnership for Violence Prevention Project (PVP) to strengthen community-led action against violence against women and girls.

During the session, participants explored practical ways Islamic teachings can promote dignity, compassion, justice, respect, and safety within families and communities.

The leaders also engaged with Islamic study guides and the Code of Conduct for Islamic Leaders, identifying ways to use sermons, counselling spaces, and community platforms to challenge harmful norms, support survivors, and encourage peaceful, respectful communities.

Through these meaningful conversations and shared commitments, we can prevent violence and ensure everyone lives with dignity and respect in our communities.

CEWHIN, with support from the Ford Foundation under the Partnership for Violence Prevention(PVP) Project engaged traditional leaders and key community stakeholders in Osun State at a Consultative Forum focused on strengthening community-led prevention of violence against women and girls.

Participants were presented with some harmful cultural norms and practices that increase the vulnerability of women and girls to violence, identified during town hall meetings.

Traditional leaders shared perspectives on their role as custodians of culture and community authority, and identified practical ways to promote safety, dignity, accountability and survivor support within their communities.

The leaders adopted the community framework and committed to challenging harmful practices, promoting prevention messages, strengthening referral pathways, and mobilising collective action to prevent gender-based violence.

CEWHIN, supported by the Ford Foundation ford under the Partnership for Violence Prevention (PVP) Project, engaged religious leaders and key faith-based community stakeholders in Osun State at a Consultative Forum focused on strengthening faith- and community-led prevention of violence against women and girls.

Participants reviewed identified harmful social norms, beliefs and practices that increase the vulnerability of women and girls to violence. They shared perspectives on their influence within the faith communities and identified practical ways to promote safety, dignity, accountability, survivor support and prevention messages among their congregations and wider communities.

The code of conduct and study guides developed for the Islamic and Christian leaders were reviewed and adopted as practical tools to be utilized in challenging harmful norms and promoting values that uphold the rights and dignity of women and girls.

Participants committed to strengthening referral pathways and mobilising collective action to prevent violence against women and girls.

CEWHIN organised a Youth Consultative Forum as part of the Partnership for Violence Prevention (PVP) Project, supported by Ford Foundation .The forum aimed to strengthen youth-led action to prevent violence against women and girls.

Participants shared their experiences and perspectives on the factors that increase young people’s vulnerability to violence, including substance abuse, harmful use of technology, and cultural norms that may normalise abuse. They also explored practical prevention strategies and developed youth-led commitments to promote safer and more respectful communities online and offline.

Through this forum, CEWHIN strengthened the role of young people as advocates for preventing physical, sexual, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
