On World Humanitarian Day, observed on August 19, we at Girls Inspired Development Network join the rest of the world to honour humanitarian workers who have lost their lives while serving others in some of the world's most difficult and dangerous places.

Humanitarian workers step into crises when others are forced to flee. They provide food, shelter, protection, healthcare, education and hope to people affected by conflict, disasters, displacement and poverty. Yet, they often work under immense pressure and face threats, attacks, insecurity, trauma and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice - the loss of their lives.

This year's theme, “Honouring fallen humanitarians and calling for greater protection of health care,” reminds us that those who dedicate their lives to saving others must not become targets themselves.

At Girls Inspired Development Network, we believe every life matters and that those who serve humanity deserve safety, dignity and protection.

We remember the fallen.
We honour the brave.
And we call for stronger protection for humanitarian workers and healthcare workers who continue to serve communities in crisis.

Humanity should never be a dangerous profession.

When women and girls are empowered, entire societies thrive. They drive innovation, strengthen families, transform communities, and create a ripple effect of progress that benefits everyone.

An empowered girl grows into a woman who leads with confidence, challenges injustice, and lifts others as she climbs. That iswhy investing in her education, safety, and voice is not just the right thing to do, but the smartest thing any society can do.

Digital Violence We Have Learned To Overlook Or Normalize

In this digital age, some forms of violence are so common that we hardly recognise them as violence anymore.

Things like:

1) Online sexual harassment - unsolicited sexual comments, messages, images or advances.

2) Cyberbullying - repeated insults, ridicule, body-shaming, threats or humiliation online.

3) Cyberstalking - constantly monitoring, tracking or contacting someone online despite their discomfort or refusal.

4) Doxxing - sharing someone's private information, such as their address or phone number, without their consent.

5) Impersonation - creating fake accounts or pretending to be someone in order to deceive, embarrass or harm them.

6) Non-consensual sharing of intimate images - sharing private or intimate content without the person's consent, often as a form of revenge, humiliation or control.

7) Coordinated online abuse - deliberately mobilising others to attack, threaten, shame or silence someone online.

These behaviours are often dismissed as just jokes, social media drama, or part of being online. They are NOT.

What happens online can have very real consequences offline.

At Girls Inspired Development Network, we believe women and girls should be able to exist, speak and participate online without harassment, intimidation or abuse.

Let's stop normalising digital violence. Let's call it what it is.

Digital Violence Has Real-Life Consequences.

Digital violence against women and girls may happen behind a screen, but its impact is very real. The threats, harassment, cyberstalking, bullying, doxxing, impersonation, sexual harassment and non-consensual sharing of intimate images can affect every part of a survivor’s life.

The impact can include:

1) Self-isolation: Survivors may withdraw from friends, family and online spaces because they no longer feel safe.

2) Low self-esteem: Constant insults, humiliation and body-shaming can damage confidence and self-worth.

3) Fear and anxiety: Threats and stalking can make women and girls feel unsafe, even in their own homes.

4) Emotional and psychological distress: Digital abuse can contribute to stress, shame, helplessness and emotional trauma.

5) Damage to reputation: False information, impersonation or the sharing of private content can affect relationships, education and employment opportunities.

6) Silencing and loss of participation: Fear of being attacked online may discourage women and girls from speaking, creating content, participating in public conversations or expressing their opinions.

7) Economic consequences: Online abuse can affect careers, businesses, professional opportunities and income.

8) Physical safety risks: Online threats and stalking can sometimes escalate into offline harassment, intimidation or physical violence.

Digital violence is not "just online." It can have lasting consequences offline.

At Girls Inspired Development Network, we believe women and girls deserve to participate in digital spaces without fear, intimidation or abuse. Raising awareness, promoting digital safety and challenging harmful behaviours are important steps towards creating safer and more inclusive online communities.

Today, on National Nonprofit Day, we celebrate the organisations, volunteers, partners, advocates and changemakers who continue to show up for a better world.

At Girls Inspired Development Network, we believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, lead and discover the full extent of her potential.

Through education, mentorship, STEM and digital skills, advocacy, health and wellbeing initiatives, and community outreach, we work alongside girls and young women, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to rise and create a better future.

Digital violence against women and girls is violence too.

The internet should be a space for connection, learning, expression, and opportunity, not a place where women and girls are threatened, stalked, humiliated, sexually harassed, or silenced.

Digital violence can take many forms, and recognising them is an important step towards preventing and addressing online abuse.

Here are some forms of digital violence and their definition:

1) Threats:
Sending messages or making statements that threaten to harm, intimidate, expose, or silence a woman or girl online.

2) Doxxing:
Publishing or sharing someone’s private information, such as their home address, phone number, workplace, or other identifying details without their consent, often putting them at risk.

3) Cyberstalking:
Repeatedly monitoring, contacting, tracking, or following someone online in a way that causes fear, distress, or makes them feel unsafe.

4) Cyberbullying:
Using digital platforms to repeatedly insult, shame, ridicule, threaten, or deliberately exclude someone.

5) Impersonation:
Pretending to be another person online by creating fake accounts, using their identity, or posting content in their name to deceive, embarrass, or harm them.

6) Online Harassment:
Repeated unwanted messages, insults, intimidation, sexual comments, or other abusive behaviour directed at someone through digital platforms.

7) Coordinated Abuse:
When multiple people work together online to target, attack, threaten, shame, or silence a woman or girl, often through mass harassment or abusive campaigns.

8) Online Sexual Harassment:
Unwanted sexual comments, messages, advances, requests, sexualised jokes, or sexually explicit content directed at someone online.

9) Non-consensual Sharing of Intimate Images:
Sharing, posting, or threatening to share someone’s intimate images or videos without their consent, including images that were originally shared privately.

Digital violence is real violence. It can have serious emotional, social, financial, and physical consequences.

What is Digital Violence?

Digital violence refers to the use of technology, social media, messaging platforms or other digital spaces to harass, threaten, control, intimidate, shame or harm another person.

It can take many forms, including:
Threats
Doxxing
Cyberstalking
Cyberbullying
Impersonation
Online harassment
Coordinated abuse
Online sexual harassment
Non-consensual sharing of intimate images

Women and girls are often disproportionately targeted, with the impact extending beyond the digital space into their mental wellbeing, safety, relationships, education and participation in public life.

At Girls Inspired Development Network, we believe that empowering girls and women also means creating safer digital spaces for them. Through our advocacy, education and awareness efforts, we work to help girls recognise digital violence, understand their rights, protect themselves online and speak up when they experience or witness abuse.

Digital violence is violence. It should never be normalised, excused or ignored.
