Recap of the World Hepatitis Day Awareness Programme by Dr Fatade

Today's awareness programme helped us better understand hepatitis and the importance of preventing, detecting, and treating it early. The key lessons learned include:

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, mainly caused by viruses such as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

Hepatitis B and C are the most common in Nigeria and can lead to serious liver diseases, including liver cancer, if left untreated.

Many people with hepatitis have no symptoms, making regular screening very important.

Hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination, which is safe and effective.

Hepatitis can spread through infected blood, unprotected s*xual contact, sharing needles or sharp objects, and from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

Simple preventive measures include getting vaccinated, avoiding the sharing of sharp objects, practising safe s*x, ensuring safe blood transfusions, and maintaining good hygiene.

Early testing and treatment save lives and help prevent complications.

We also learned that people living with hepatitis should not be stigmatized. They deserve support, encouragement, and access to proper medical care.

As Lions, we are called to:

Educate our communities about hepatitis.

Champion screening and vaccination.

Support health awareness campaigns.

Partner with healthcare providers to organize outreach programmes.

Advocate for a healthier and hepatitis-free society.

Simple Explanation of World Hepatitis Day

Good day, everyone.

What is World Hepatitis Day?

Why are we holding an awereness online health talk today ?

World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on 28th July to raise awareness about hepatitis, a disease that causes inflammation of the liver.

Many people live with hepatitis without knowing they are infected because it often shows no symptoms until the liver has been seriously damaged.

The purpose of this day is to encourage people to:

Learn about hepatitis.

Get tested.

Get vaccinated (especially against Hepatitis B).

Seek treatment early if infected.

Help stop the spread of the disease.

So How Does Hepatitis Affect Nigerians?

Hepatitis is a major health challenge in Nigeria. Millions of Nigerians are living with Hepatitis B or C, and many are unaware of their status. If left untreated, hepatitis can lead to:

Liver damage (cirrhosis).

Liver cancer.

Liver failure.

Premature death.

Many infections can be prevented through vaccination, safe medical practices, good hygiene, and avoiding the sharing of sharp objects.

Why Should We, as Lions, Care?

As Lions, our motto is "We Serve." Service is not only about giving money or materials—it is also about saving lives through education and prevention.

We are expected to:

Educate our communities about hepatitis.

Encourage people to get tested and know their status.

Promote Hepatitis B vaccination.

Help reduce stigma against people living with hepatitis.

Partner with hospitals and health organizations to organize awareness campaigns and screening programmes.

Continue to advocate for healthier communities.

Every person we educate may go on to protect their family, friends, and neighbours from this disease.

I am truly honored and grateful to accept your trust in electing me as the Incoming President of the Lagos Unity Estate Lions Club, District 404B3.

Today, the journey starts..

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you for this incredible privilege. Your confidence in my ability to lead our esteemed club is both a great honor and a responsibility that I hold dear. I deeply appreciate your support, encouragement, and belief in my leadership.

As I prepare to serve, I recognize that no president can succeed alone. Our strength lies in our unity, commitment to service, and shared vision of making a meaningful impact in our community. I eagerly look forward to collaborating with all members, our dedicated board, past presidents, and our partners to build upon the remarkable achievements of those who have come before me.

Together, we will continue to uphold the Lions' motto, "We Serve," by expanding our humanitarian efforts, empowering our communities, supporting those in need, and fostering fellowship among our members. Proudly representing service, unity, and community impact, members of Lagos Unity Estate Lions Club participated in the vibrant 2026 Multiple District 404 Nigeria Convention Parade Carnival held in Asaba, Delta State. The club marched alongside fellow Lions from across the country, showcasing the spirit of volunteerism, leadership, and humanitarian service that defines Lions Clubs International.

Dressed in coordinated club attire and carrying the club banner with pride, members demonstrated their commitment to the Lions motto, “We Serve.” The colorful parade provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Lions across Nigeria while strengthening bonds of fellowship among clubs and districts.

Vision has been at the heart of Lions service for over a century. During Vision Week, Lions will promote eye health, support sight-saving programs, provide vision screenings, and raise awareness about preventable blindness. Together, we can help individuals see a brighter future and improve quality of life in our communities and around the world.
