On behalf of all of us at FYL, I am thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Taiwo Abdul-Gafar Akorede Jr., the Founder of this great platform, on his well-deserved promotion to Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, as well as the launch of his book, "Beyond the Shark Attack (A Soldier's Journey Beyond the Norms)."

Mr. Akorede exemplifies the finest qualities of humanity far beyond being a soldier. He is a brilliant mind, profoundly humble, and deeply compassionate, traits that have endeared him to all of us who know him. These attributes, which have never been in doubt, speak to his exceptional character and have undoubtedly merited this prestigious advancement in his military career. As he continues to rise through the ranks with dedication and excellence, we have no doubt that he is destined for the pinnacle of leadership in the US Army, and he will continue to serve as a model of resilience and integrity.

As a student of knowledge, I particularly want to laud Mr. Akorede for authoring a book, which I believe masterfully documents his extraordinary experiences in his profession and presents great lessons into leadership that go outside conventional boundaries. Truly, his journey is defined by strategic innovation and the courage he has shown over the years, and it is indeed inspirational for young people within FYL and across Nigeria and beyond.

Sir, we wish you continued success, good health, and fulfilment in all your endeavours. Congratulations, again and again.

STATEMENT FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR ASPIRING YOUTHS IN ETHICAL LEADERSHIP (FYL) ON INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2025

The Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL) proudly acknowledges the remarkable resilience and relentless efforts of Nigerian and African young people we mark International Youth Day. Across the continent, we’ve placed our names and those of our nations at the forefront through extraordinary strides in leadership, entrepreneurship, and the creation and sustenance of innovative startups. Our dedication shines in competitive arenas, our commitment to politics and governance, and our impactful contributions to education, healthcare, and beyond reflects a generation determined to shape a more prosperous ground for ourselves and our nations.

FYL recognises these qualities as the ideal identities we strive to cultivate through our diverse programs and activities, notably the Social Impact Fellowship (SIF), designed to empower and uplift us as young minds. We remain unwavering in our mission to instill the right ethics, character, and leadership qualities in ourselves and the more younger ones among us, as well equip with the tools to achieve excellence in life for ourselves, our families, and our country. It is indeed our highest aspirations and utmost joy to witness young people excelling in our chosen crafts, and we extend a heartfelt call to those few who may be distracted to refocus on the larger vision, and draw inspiration from peers who are setting exemplary standards across various fields.

On this International Youth Day, FYL extends warmest wishes to all of us. We celebrate our potential and achievements, and we urge stakeholders; governments, organisations, and broader communities to continue investing in our causes, while calling on elders, who were once youths like us, to provide more support and motivation to help overcome challenges and diverse commitments. The world requires the collective effort of everyone, and there is no doubt that we young people are fundamental in harnessing the visions and aspirations that will drive progress. At all times, FYL remains committed to this noble cause.

HAPPY EID-L-KABIR FROM FYL

The Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL) sends warm greetings to all our young volunteers, especially muslims in Nigeria and everyone celebrating around the world on this day of Eid-l-Kabir.

This noble occasion mandates us to think beyond the celebration - to the quiet lesson of putting others before ourselves. It reminds us that our immediate and extended neighbourhoods grow stronger when we stand together and share uniform dreams for a bountiful tomorrow. FYL sees Eid as a call to action for our young people to lead with kindness and build a community that gives everyone a fair shot to succeed.

We wish you all a Happy Eid-l-Kabir, hoping it stirs in us a renewed commitment to work as one. Let’s use this moment to support each other, to care for our communities, and to hold onto hope, even when challenges seem big. FYL prays for peace in your hearts and strength in our shared journey to make our communities a place we’re all proud to call home. Let’s keep pushing for a future where fairness and unity lead the way. FYL sends you and your family love, and ask that you enjoy this celebration.

STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION FOR ASPIRING YOUTHS IN ETHICAL LEADERSHIP (FYL) ON THE UNFORTUNATE WAEC EXAMINATION DELAY INCIDENT OF MAY 28, 2025

The Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL) is deeply troubled by the unfortunate events that unfolded on May 28, 2025, during the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) English examination for secondary school students across Nigeria. We received verified reports that a large number of students remained in their schools and examination centers well into the evening—some as late as 5PM, 6PM, and even 9PM or beyond—still writing their exams, without electricity or with disturbing noise from generators. Students could not return to their homes until 10PM, 11PM and even beyond, their parents and guardian were left in a panic and distressing state. This delay was reportedly caused by invigilators/officials of WAEC not delivering exam questions until around 5PM, a situation we understand stemmed from leaked questions, forcing the examination body to reset them. This is an unacceptable and distressing experience for students who have prepared diligently for this critical examination.

We firmly believe that the fault lies with the examination body, not the students, who were left in a state of emotional and psychological distress due to this ordeal. Examinations are already a significant source of stress, and subjecting students to such prolonged delays and uncertainty only compounds their trauma. Many of these young individuals were placed in a disturbing state of mind, which could have impacted their performance in an exam that plays a significant role in determining their future. The WAEC English examination is a prerequisite for gaining admission into tertiary institutions, it shapes the trajectory of their lives. We humbly demand a clear explanation, a public apology, and full accountability from WAEC for this incident.

At FYL, we have had the privilege of interacting with many of these students through our annual Social Impact Fellowships (SIF) across various states in Nigeria. We know firsthand that they are bright, talented individuals with promising futures, eager to seize greater opportunities and tackle challenges ahead. It is disheartening to see them suffer for circumstances they did not cause. These young people should not have their aspirations jeopardised due to systemic failures beyond their control. Their dreams of advancing to higher education and contributing meaningfully to society must not be undermined by such preventable incidents.

We are deeply sympathetic to the emotional and psychological toll this incident may have taken on the students. We are confident that the prolonged delays and uncertainty affected their well-being and potentially their performance in the exam. To all the students who endured this traumatic experience, we at FYL feel your pain and stand with you in solidarity. We offer our heartfelt support and encouragement during this challenging time, and we recognise the resilience you have shown in the face of such adversity.

We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Education and other commissioned authorities, to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The government must address the implications of this unfortunate event, even if it requires re-conducting the English examination to ensure fairness. The Ministry must work closely with WAEC to harmonise solutions that prioritise the students’ well-being and academic integrity. Most importantly, measures must be put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future, especially as the ongoing WAEC examination continues with remaining papers.

The Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL) remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of young Nigerian people. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and support the affected students in any way we can. We urge WAEC and the Federal Government to act swiftly and decisively to restore confidence in the examination process and safeguard the future of our young leaders. Together, we must ensure that such an incident does not repeat itself, allowing our students to pursue their dreams without undue hardship.

It is with a deep sense of pride and honour that I acknowledge our esteemed founder, Mr. Taiwo Abdul-Gafar Akorede Jr. , for his recent remarkable and distinguished achievement. He continues to project himself as an exemplary figure, a truly admirable human being whose person has been tested and proven across all dimensions, - this has earned him the deep respect and admiration of everyone at the Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL).

We at FYL join in celebrating his extraordinary accomplishment at Columbia University, New York, where he has graduated with remarkable distinction. Beyond this academic milestone, Mr. Akorede was also honoured with a prestigious service award - a recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedicated service within the School of General Studies and the broader Columbia University community. This is big, and a no small feat. This recognition speaks to his profound impact and commitment to excellence in all he does, values that endear all of us in FYL to him.

His journey from Nigeria to the United States is a revelation of the core values we uphold at FYL. Throughout his time at Columbia, he has consistently embodied the vision, principles, culture, and ethics that define the Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL). His unwavering dedication to these ideals reinforces the mission we strive to advance - more particularly, it inspires us all to lead with integrity and purpose, and keep on with the journey.

One of what I believe sets Mr. Akorede at the peak is his demonstration of unparalleled commitment to balancing his rigorous and demanding studies at Columbia University with his active service in the United States Army. If this tells us anything at all, more than anything else, it established his brilliance, resilience, and discipline. Today, his success, academic distinction, and outstanding recognition from Columbia’s leadership fills us with pride. His ability to excel in both spheres and several other community services highlights his exceptional character and leadership, which continue to guide us at FYL.

On behalf of everyone at FYL, I express our profound pride in his attainments, his unmatched commitment to decency, ethical living, and responsible mentorship. His voice and guidance remain an emblem for us all, and I am privileged to lead our community of ethical leaders in marking this significant milestone. We celebrate with him, his immediate and extended family, which the FYL belongs, and pray that he remains a worthy ambassador and torchbearer for our shared values.

Congratulations, sir, on this well-deserved honour and accomplishments!

EID-L-FITR MUBARAK FROM FYL

On behalf of the Foundations for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL), we are delighted to extend our warmest Eid-l-Fitr greetings to our volunteers and young leaders, their families, and all who celebrate this blessed occasion. After a month of Ramadan filled with reflection, fasting, and devotion, we join you in the joy of this sacred festival that marks the triumph of discipline, compassion, and unity. At FYL, we see Eid as a beautiful reminder of the values we hold dear: integrity, empathy, and the collective pursuit of a better tomorrow, which sits with our mission to nurture ethical leadership among young people in Nigeria and beyond.

This Eid-l-Fitr, as we gather with loved ones to share meals, laughter, and prayers, let us also reflect on the lessons of Ramadan that inspire us to lead with kindness and accountability. We believe that for many of our young members who have also volunteered across other different platforms, this season has been a time of growth for them, whether through organising community iftars, volunteering at local charities, or simply supporting a friend through the fast. These acts of service mirror the spirit of Eid, it encourages us to look beyond ourselves and strengthen the bonds that hold our communities together, especially we exist in an environment that often tests our resolve to do what is right.

FYL remains committed to empowering the next generation of leaders who embody the principles of ethical leadership, drawing inspiration from the unity and generosity that Eid-l-Fitr exemplifies. We pray that this festive season brings you renewed hope, peace, and the courage to continue making a positive impact in your spheres of influence. May Allah accept your good deeds, shower you with blessings, and grant you a future filled with purpose and joy. Aameen.

Eid Mubarak from all of us at FYL!

STATEMENT FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR ASPIRING YOUTHS IN ETHICAL LEADERSHIP (FYL) ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, MARCH 08, 2025

On this remarkable occasion of International Women's Day, the Foundation for Aspiring Youths in Ethical Leadership (FYL) joins the global community in celebrating the extraordinary contributions of women across the world. The President of FYL leads to reflect on the boundless resilience and innovation of women, acknowledges their incredible efforts in shaping our various societies, driving progress, and inspiring generations. We acknowledge their efforts in the boardrooms of global cities, and the rural heartlands of nations like Nigeria — women have consistently defied odds, broken barriers, and redefined what leadership and excellence mean. Today, we honour their spirit and the meaning they leave on humanity’s shared story.

In Nigeria, the array of women’s achievements is rich and sufficiently-reliable, it is clear evidence of their tenacity and vision. The President of FYL takes particular pride in recognising the strides made by Nigerian women who, despite some systemic challenges, have risen as pillars of strength in governance, entrepreneurship, education, and community development. These women are not just participants in history; they are its architects, they feature as a legacy of courage and compassion that reverberates far beyond our neighbourhoods. Today, women voices now echo as powerful calls for equity, justice, and transformation—values that FYL holds dear in its mission to build and sustain ethical leadership.

Closer to home, FYL celebrates the dynamism of young Nigerian women who are making waves and rewriting narratives of possibility. These trailblazers, with their boldness and brilliance, are the heartbeat of a new era—leading startups, advocating for change, and mentoring the next generation with a fearlessness that inspires us all. FYL sees in them the embodiment of hope, a generation unafraid to dream big and act decisively. Their contributions remind us that the future of leadership is not only bright but also fiercely inclusive, a legacy FYL is committed to supporting through mentorship, empowerment, and opportunity.

Our own journey at FYL mirrors this spirit of inclusion and recognition of women’s leadership. We take pride in our history, having once been led by a formidable female President whose vision continues to guide our path. Today, our executive cabinet reflects this commitment to gender equity, with four exceptional women serving alongside two men, steering FYL with wisdom, dedication, and grace. This balance is not just a statistic—it is an intentional statement of the FYL's Board of Trustees, but more particularly, of our belief that leadership thrives when diverse voices, especially those of women, are elevated and empowered.

FYL wish all women a Happy International Women’s Day, we recommit to pushing for a world where every young leader, regardless of gender, can aspire, achieve, and be the best available in this world.
