What if one computer could change what a child believes is possible?

Picture a child sitting in front of a computer for the first time.

Not just learning how to use it, but discovering that the world of technology is something they can actually belong to.

They could learn about AI.
Build a skill.

And perhaps, for the first time, see themselves becoming a tech professional and solving real problems.

That is the future we see with Project Techrise.

We want to equip the computer room at Birrel Avenue Secondary School and give these students the opportunity to learn from Cisco specialists through a month-long AI boot camp.

Because sometimes, shaping a child's future starts with simply giving them access to what they never had.

Happy International Literacy Day! 📚

Today, we celebrate the readers, writers, teachers and learners who shape the world around us, and everyone still on their journey to literacy.

This year’s theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity,” speaks directly to the work we do through Rotary: creating opportunities for people and communities to learn, grow and thrive through our Basic Education and Literacy projects.

Because literacy is more than the ability to read and write. It is the ability to access opportunity, imagine possibilities and shape a better future.

And if literacy ever opened a door for you, someone opened it first.

Leadership doesn't happen in a classroom. It happens at the table.

Our September Business Meeting at Lagos Airport Hotel brought members of the Rotary Club of Gbagada together to review our work, reflect on progress and make decisions for the months ahead, including preparations for the Investiture & Fundraising Ceremony of the 43rd Administration.

But this meeting had some special guests.

Young leaders who had just completed the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) joined us for the evening.

At RYLA, they were challenged to think differently, step forward, work together and discover their capacity to lead.

At the Business Meeting, they got to see what happens next.

They saw Rotarians deliberate.
They saw ideas become decisions.
They saw commitments being made.
They saw that service is not simply something we talk about. It is work.

For us, it was an opportunity to give these young leaders a glimpse of the Rotary world beyond the programme, and perhaps, a glimpse of where their own leadership journey could take them.

One day, we hope they won't just have a seat at the table.
We hope they will be the ones helping to shape what happens around it.

That is how we build the next generation of leaders.

And that is how "Service Above Self" becomes more than a motto.

As we prepare for our Investiture & Fundraising Ceremony, on September 20, 2026 , we invite you to support the work of the Rotary Club of Gbagada and help us continue creating opportunities that turn potential into impact.

RYLA 2026 reminded us what's possible when young people are given room to learn, connect, and discover who they're becoming. Investing in them is investing in the future we all get to live in.

As that energy settles, September opens with a theme close to Rotary's heart: Basic Education and Literacy. 📚

Across Gbagada and beyond, literacy is still the single biggest lever for breaking cycles - of poverty, of limited opportunity, of children never getting the shot they deserve. This month, we are turning our attention there, and we'll be sharing more on what that looks like for us in the weeks ahead.

As we wrap up Membership Month, we celebrate our proactive Treasurer, Rotarian Seye Odukoya, whose journey with Rotary began with a desire to connect, be part of a social community, and use her skills to serve humanity.

She found Rotary, and through her active involvement, her understanding of Rotary continues to deepen.

For her, Rotary is an opportunity to serve mankind, live fully, and know that you are making an impact in the world around you.

What if one experience could change how a young person sees themselves - and what they believe they are capable of?

That is what RYLA is about.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) gives young people the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, take responsibility, work with others, discover their strengths and begin to see themselves differently.

At RYLA 2026, held from August 15–23, 2026, we watched young people learn, lead, collaborate, compete, create, laugh, and grow.

Because leadership isn’t something we wait for young people to discover someday.

We give them opportunities to practise it today.

To parents, guardians and young people: watch out for RYLA 2027. You may be giving a young person an experience that stays with them long after the programme ends.
