Yesterday, history was made, not just for Nigeria, but for hope, rehabilitation, and the transformative power of opportunity.
Against all odds, Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center proudly became the FIRST custodial center in Nigeria to represent the country at the prestigious Chess For Freedom Competition, an international online chess tournament for incarcerated individuals across the globe..
And we did not just participate to make up the numbers…
Out of 16 correctional facilities from countries including Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Namibia, and Eswatini, Nigeria finished in an outstanding 6th place at the Intercontinental (Africa) Chess For Freedom Competition.
This moment is bigger than chess.
It is proof that inmates are more than their past mistakes. It is proof that with the right platform, mentorship, and opportunity, lives can be transformed and greatness can emerge from unexpected places.
A special appreciation to Chess To School for their partnership and commitment in training the inmates for 8 intensive weeks. Your contribution played a massive role in the history we witnessed yesterday.
We also honor the memory and vision of our late founder, Bidemi Oladipupo, who held this chess initiative so close to his heart before his passing. Yesterday’s achievement is a continuation of the dream he believed in so deeply. His vision lives on.
This is only the beginning.
From behind custodial walls, history was written.
And Nigeria was proudly represented. 🇳🇬♟️
