Yesterday, history was made, not just for Nigeria, but for hope, rehabilitation, and the transformative power of opportunity.

Against all odds, Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center proudly became the FIRST custodial center in Nigeria to represent the country at the prestigious Chess For Freedom Competition, an international online chess tournament for incarcerated individuals across the globe..

And we did not just participate to make up the numbers…

Out of 16 correctional facilities from countries including Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Namibia, and Eswatini, Nigeria finished in an outstanding 6th place at the Intercontinental (Africa) Chess For Freedom Competition.

This moment is bigger than chess.
It is proof that inmates are more than their past mistakes. It is proof that with the right platform, mentorship, and opportunity, lives can be transformed and greatness can emerge from unexpected places.

A special appreciation to Chess To School for their partnership and commitment in training the inmates for 8 intensive weeks. Your contribution played a massive role in the history we witnessed yesterday.

We also honor the memory and vision of our late founder, Bidemi Oladipupo, who held this chess initiative so close to his heart before his passing. Yesterday’s achievement is a continuation of the dream he believed in so deeply. His vision lives on.

This is only the beginning.
From behind custodial walls, history was written.
And Nigeria was proudly represented. 🇳🇬♟️

Today, we paid a courtesy visit to ACG Olatubosun Ajibogun, the Assistant Controller General, Zone A, to brief him on a historic milestone about to happen within his zone.

Tomorrow, inmates from the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center will proudly represent Nigeria at the Chess for Freedom competition, a global online chess tournament for incarcerated inmates across the world.

This will be the first time Nigeria will participate in this international competition, and we are honored to be part of the journey rewriting narratives, restoring hope, and proving that correctional facilities can also be places of transformation, learning, and excellence.

History will be made tomorrow, and we are proud that it is happening from Zone A. 🇳🇬♟️

Tomorrow, history will be made.

Three months ago, what started as a simple vision became a movement. In collaboration with Chess To School, we took the game of chess into Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, not just as a game, but as a tool for hope, discipline, transformation, and mental liberation.

For 8 weeks, the inmates trained, learned, strategized, failed, improved, and believed. And now, that journey has led to this moment.

Tomorrow, for the very first time in Nigeria’s history, inmates from Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre will represent Nigeria at the Intercontinental Chess For Freedom Competition, competing with correctional facilities and incarcerated players from across the world.

This is bigger than chess.
This is proof that purpose can be found in unlikely places.
This is proof that rehabilitation is possible.
This is proof that even behind bars, the human mind can still dream, grow, and compete on a global stage.

Proud of every inmate who stayed committed to the process.
Proud of every partner who believed in this vision.
Proud that Nigeria is finally taking its seat at this global table. 🇳🇬♟️

Tomorrow, the world will watch.
And history will remember.

In collaboration with Chess to School, we took the game of chess behind the walls of Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center, where inmates underwent 8 weeks of intensive training. What started as a simple introduction to the board has now become a gateway to discipline, strategy and hope.

This journey is leading to something bigger.

For the very first time, a Nigerian correctional facility will participate in the Chess for Freedom global competition, organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). We also had the privilege of being part of the official technical meeting in preparation for this global event.

From confinement to competition.
From limitation to representation.

Nigeria is not just showing up, we are making a statement.
History is being made quietlybut powerfully.

This is more than chess. This is transformation. This is restoration. This is impact.

From being the first organization to take Chess to a custodial center in Nigeria in collaboration with Chess To School, we are about taking Nigeria Correctional Service onto the global stage at the Chess for Freedom competition…

What started as a bold idea has grown into a movement of transformation, hope and second chances.

A few years ago, we walked into the Borstal Institution, Abeokuta, with more than just chess boards; we carried a vision. A vision to challenge minds, instill discipline, and awaken purpose in places often forgotten. History was made.

We didn’t stop there.

At Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center, we went deeper; 8 weeks of intensive training, learning, strategy and self-discovery in partnership with Chess To School. What we witnessed was beyond the game: resilience sharpened, confidence restored and minds redefined.

Now, we stand at the edge of another historic moment.

For the very first time, Nigeria is on the verge of being represented at the Chess for Freedom competition, a global platform for incarcerated individuals across the world. And our very own inmates from Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center are ready to take that stage.

This is bigger than chess.
This is about rewriting narratives.
This is about proving that potential exists everywhere even behind bars.

The journey continues…♟️

In partnership with Chess To School, we spent 8 weeks inside the Bidemi Oladipupo ICT HUB at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center; and the result? Transformed minds speaking powerful truth:

"If we teach young people how to think like chess players, we will reduce crime, improve leadership and build a discipline nation"

"Before we reform prisons, we must reform the mind"

"For you that wants to be transformed, try and come to school and learn chess so that tomorrow, your life will not remain the same"

This is bigger than a game. This is impact.

From learning the basics to making strategic moves with confidence...It has been an inspiring 8-week chess journey at the Bidemi Oladipupo ICT HUB, Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center..

In collaboration with Chess To School, we took the game of chess to the inmates, equipping them with a skill that teaches patience, discipline, focus and critical thinking.

Few days ago, we held the grand finale of this remarkable training, where inmates competed in an exciting tournament that showcased how much they had learned over the past weeks. It was a thrilling display of growth, resilience and determination.

At the end of the competition, a champion emerged. The winner was presented with a trophy, while the first and second runners-up received cash prizes and medals in recognition of their outstanding performance.

This grand finale is also part of our preparation for the Chess for Freedom competition . , an online global chess tournament that brings together incarcerated participants from around the world..

We are deeply grateful to Chess To School for their commitment, hard work and dedication throughout these past 8 weeks. Your impact has been truly meaningful.

At Anchor Heritage Initiative, we remain committed to creating opportunities for transformation, learning, and hope behind prison walls.

Today marks a powerful milestone for us at Anchor Heritage Initiative.

For the past 8 weeks, in collaboration with Chess To School, we have taken the game of chess into Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center, creating a space for learning, discipline, strategy, and transformation. What started as a simple idea has grown into weeks of intense learning, commitment and mental development for the inmates.

Today, we host the Grand Finale
A day where the inmates will go head-to-head in a chess competition, showcasing everything they’ve learned. The winners will be awarded a medal and trophy, symbols of excellence, focus, and resilience.

This initiative goes beyond just a game. It is a step towards preparing the inmates for the Chess For Freedom competition, an international online chess tournament for inmates around the world. If registered, this will mark Nigeria’s first-ever participation in this global event and we couldn’t be more proud of how far we’ve come.

We extend our deepest appreciation to Chess To School for their dedication, consistency and passion over the past 8 weeks. Your impact has been truly remarkable and this journey would not have been possible without you.

At Anchor Heritage Initiative, we remain committed to reforming lives, restoring hope and creating opportunities even behind bars.
