"Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think." ~ Albert Einstein.
This quote resonates well with me and I can't agree more.
The kind of education we practice now encourages memorization and focuses on grades. The system encourages students to cram information simply to pass examinations. However, in the long run, those who become change-makers are not those with the best cramming abilities but those who are able to think outside the box.
While in school, I often found myself asking: How will I use this knowledge in real life? How does it translate beyond the classroom?
I have come to realise that critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills that education can provide. Unfortunately, it is also a skill that many students are not intentionally taught. Instead of forcing students to cram concepts, teachers can do better by encouraging critical thinking. Rather than giving out all the information, we can guide them to discover some things by themselves. This will make learning more meaningful and whatever they discover by themselves will surely stay with them.
