Restoring Dignity in Maternal Care
At Odo-Nla PHC in Ikorodu, a critical gap was uncovered—pregnant women attending antenatal care were being asked to pay for HIV testing due to a shortage of test kits. This not only contradicted national guidelines but also created a barrier to accessing essential, life-saving services.
This intervention was implemented under the GF/GC7/NGA-C-IHVN Grant, where RHODA’S HAVEN Network for Women Living with HIV/AIDS, as a Community-Based Organization (CBO), is driving community-led monitoring (CLM) to strengthen health systems and improve service delivery.
Through CLM, the gap was identified and community stakeholders—including traditional leaders and women representatives—were mobilized to take action. Their collective support led to the provision of HIV test kits, face masks, and hand sanitizer, restoring free HIV testing services at the facility.
The impact has been significant:
✔️ Free HIV testing services restored
✔️ Financial burden on pregnant women eliminated
✔️ Increased trust and confidence in the health system
✔️ Improved quality of care and infection prevention
✔️ Strengthened community ownership and accountability
Voices from the community highlight the change:
“Before now, we had to pay. Now, the service is free again—it gives us peace of mind.”
This success story demonstrates the power of community-led action under the GF/GC7/NGA-C-IHVN project—showing that when communities are empowered, practical and sustainable solutions emerge.
Now is the time to scale up community-led monitoring and strengthen health systems—so no woman is denied access to essential care. Together, we can build a system that truly works for everyone.
