R**e culture does not start with violence. It starts with jokes, victim blaming and the quiet acceptance of behaviour we have been told is “normal.” Every layer of this pyramid is connected. When we challenge the bottom, we protect people from the top.

NB: You can walk into our centre and get the necessary medical and psychosocial care you need, and then we will assist you in making a report to the authorities.

Domestic violence is a human rights issue, not a private family matter.

The disturbing report of a newly married husband allegedly losing his life in Katsina is a painful reminder that unresolved violence, anger, abuse, and unhealthy conflict in relationships can have tragic consequences. While the facts remain under police investigation, one truth is clear: violence in the home—whether against a spouse, husband, wife, or child—must never be normalised.

Just yesterday, I received a distress call to intervene in a domestic violence dispute where a man was reportedly mercilessly beating his wife. This raises urgent concerns about the rights to dignity, security, life, and freedom from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment as protected under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights principles.

As a society, we must stop keeping silent. Early intervention, counselling, reporting abuse, and promoting peaceful conflict resolution can save lives. Marriage should be a place of safety, respect, and mutual dignity—not fear, violence, or silence.

REPORT ON ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS PROGRAM
Held at Iponri Estate Junior High School, Iponri, Surulere, Lagos State
4th June 2026

The International Center for Human Rights, Non-Violence and Safety Awareness (ICHRNVSA), in partnership with the Lagos Anti-Human Trafficking Hub, successfully hosted an Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Program at Iponri Estate Junior High School, Surulere, Lagos State, on 4th June 2026. The programme featured representatives from NAPTIP (National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons), the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, NBA Ikeja Branch, Hope Alive Educational Center, and a Special Guest Representative from the Education Board, all of whom contributed to educating students on the dangers, warning signs, and prevention of human trafficking.

The programme had 99 student representatives from different classes in attendance, who actively participated in the awareness and empowerment session. Students were educated on their rights, personal safety, and the importance of speaking up against suspicious movements and exploitation. At the end of the programme, all 99 students were trained and commissioned as Anti-Human Trafficking Ambassadors, charged with joining the movement to create safer communities through awareness, vigilance, and advocacy against human trafficking.

The session, delivered by Adeyinka Adeyefa Esq., Chartered Mediator and Founder of Hope Alive Educational Center, focused on understanding conflict, common causes of disagreements, effective communication, active listening, emotional control, and respectful ways of resolving misunderstandings without violence or hostility.

Participants were encouraged to embrace dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect as tools for promoting peace within the school and wider community. A key highlight of the workshop was the Peace Ambassador Pledge, where attendees committed to rejecting bullying and violence while promoting kindness, unity, and peaceful conflict resolution.

The workshop reinforced the message that while disagreements are normal, peace begins with respectful communication and responsible actions, it was followed by an active Q&A plus Counselling session and a new batch of Peace Ambassadors were sworn in.
