Sometimes, we give a seat and receive a fare.

A few days ago, on my way to work, something small happened that stayed with me.

I exchanged seats with another passenger because I thought she would be more comfortable with her large luggage.

A little while later, when it was time for me to alight, another passenger offered to pay my fare.

For a moment, I was surprised.

Then I smiled.

It wasn't the amount that moved me.

It was the kindness; the thoughtfulness behind the gesture.

And just like that, a small act of consideration had been met by another small act of kindness.

It made me pause:
How much is kindness?

I reflected further on this little encounter and what it reminded me about kindness, generosity, and making room for others.

The mentor's job isn't to give you all the answers.

There's a particular moment in mentoring that I love.

It's when someone you've been guiding no longer feels the need to immediately look to you for the answer. Instead, they think through the problem first.

They pause.
They think.
They work through it.

And then they say,

“I think I've figured it out.”

That moment is easy to miss.

But to me, it represents something important.

The goal was never to become the person with all the answers.
It was to help them become more confident in finding their own.

It's powerful to watch a mentee work through a challenge, arrive at their own conclusion, and realise:

“I can do this.”

That moment matters.

That is why I believe one of the greatest measures of a mentor isn't how many answers they can provide, but how much thinking they can unlock in others.

Because the best mentoring doesn't create dependence on the mentor. It builds confidence in the learner.
