Dear Members,

“Purpose” has become one of the most invoked and least understood concepts in corporate governance today.

Boards proclaim it. Institutional investors demand it. The Business Roundtable’s 2019 statement, signed by 181 chief executives, declared it a new foundation for how corporations should operate. Yet despite this proliferating discourse, the concept itself remains stubbornly contested, and in many cases, quietly hollowed out.

Professor Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, will deliver a public lecture on March 31, 2026, offering a rigorous examination of what corporate purpose actually means, and what it does not.

He will address the critical distinctions that governance practice has been slow to internalise: why corporate purpose is not a mission statement, not CSR, not ESG reporting, and not brand positioning, and why conflating these concepts produces concrete governance failures.

He will also examine why this question is not an abstract philosophical concern, but a structural necessity, particularly in developing economies where the gap between declared purpose and governance practice imposes the heaviest costs.
