PUBLICATION ALERT 🚨

Nigeria has a legitimate interest in stopping illegal . Mining without the required licences is unlawful, and the government has a responsibility to protect mineral resources, communities and the public interest.

But suspected illegal miners do not lose their rights when they are arrested. A person accused of an offence remains entitled to humane treatment and protection of life and dignity while in government custody.

What happened in Nigeria’s Niger State, where 37 suspected illegal miners died in NSCDC custody, puts that principle to the test. Our founder, Hammed J. Sulaiman, wrote an op-ed arguing that the state cannot enforce the law by stepping outside it — and that Nigeria needs lawful mining and accountable enforcement, not just more arrests.

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

Law and justice are not always the same thing. King’s position shows us that legality alone cannot demand obedience — a law must also be right. Where it isn’t, resisting it openly is not lawlessness; it is conscience.

UPDATED PIECE ALERT 📃🚨

Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners are dead in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ custody in Nigeria’s Niger State — but a crackdown alone won't answer the harder question: why do so many rural Nigerians end up mining and farming informally in the first place? In this week's policy and legal analysis, Mujeeb Abdulwasiu examines how weak land tenure security pushes the rural economy underground — and what Rwanda and Ethiopia did differently.

The verdict: enforcement without formalisation just pushes the crisis further off the books — the governing principle should be secure title, not confiscation and custody.

“The state is that great fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else.” — Frédéric Bastiat

Government often becomes a tool for one group to live off another, dressed up as public good. Real freedom means producing and trading, not lobbying the state to take on your behalf.

Every week, motorists across Nigeria are stopped over tinted glass — but how many actually know what the law says? In this week's legal analysis, our policy writer Ridwaan Ayesebotan Imran, Esq. unpacks the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act and what it actually means for your rights at a police checkpoint.

The verdict: security and privacy are not rivals — the governing principle is security under the rule of law.

“One of the wonderful things about free markets is that the path to greater wealth comes not from looting, plundering and enslaving one’s fellow man, as it has throughout most of human history, but by serving and pleasing him.” — Walter Williams

For most of human history, wealth was taken — by conquest, by force, by the sword. Capitalism broke that pattern: it made service, not seizure, the surest road to riches. The farmer, the trader, the manufacturer all get rich by giving people what they want, not by taking what they have. That is the quiet moral revolution markets represent — one the enemies of free enterprise rarely acknowledge.

This edition of Liberty on Air, our Rights & Responsibilities Series, puts insecurity under the lens of individual liberty, property rights, and the rule of law—with Hammed J. Sulaiman, Esq., lawyer, media practitioner and Founder of The Peoples' Mouthpiece Initiative, and Ridwaan Ayesebotan Imran (DL, B.A English-Literature, LLB(Hons), BL), lawyer, lecturer and researcher.

Under the theme, “Insecurity and the Rural Economy: How Banditry and Kidnapping Are Stealing the Freedom to Farm, Trade, and Prosper,” Hammed and Imran will explore how insecurity is quietly dismantling rural livelihoods, while examining what the Constitution demands of government and the responsibilities of citizens.

Because a free society depends on more than statistics from the city. When farmers fear their own farmland and traders fear the very roads that connect them to market, an entire community’s freedom to work, move, and prosper is under threat — and it is government’s first constitutional duty to restore it.

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.” — Adam Smith

Self-interest, properly channeled, is not greed — it’s the quiet engine of cooperation. No baker needs to love you to feed you; the market aligns his interest with your need, and society is fed without a single command issued. This is the insight the central planner forgets and the free society remembers: people don’t have to be good to do good, they only have to be free to trade.
