The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will end today, despite mounting calls from opposition political parties and civil society organisations for an extension to enable more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC maintained that the registration exercise will conclude as scheduled on Sunday, July 26, 2026, with designated registration centres operating between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The commission urged all eligible citizens who have yet to register or update their voter information to take advantage of the final hours of the exercise.

In a message shared on its official X account, the electoral body reminded Nigerians that participation in the voter registration exercise is essential for those wishing to vote in the 2027 elections.

However, opposition political parties and several civil society organisations have appealed to INEC to extend the deadline, arguing that logistical challenges, heavy turnout at registration centres, and technical issues may prevent many eligible voters from being captured in the national voters' register. They warned that ending the exercise as scheduled could disenfranchise millions of prospective voters.

Despite the appeals, INEC has ruled out any further extension, explaining that it must begin the next phase of the electoral process, including cleaning and verifying registration data, compiling the voters' register, addressing claims and objections, and preparing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the elections.

The commission reaffirmed that adhering to the electoral timetable is necessary to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process, while encouraging Nigerians who are yet to register to complete the process before the close of registration today.

The meeting, convened by the Lagos State Chairman of the NDC, Honourable King Okuneye, brought together members of the State Working Committee, Senatorial Executives, and Local Government Chairmen to deliberate on strategies for strengthening the party and positioning it for electoral success.

Addressing the gathering, Honourable Okuneye stressed the importance of unity, teamwork, and mutual respect among party officials at every level. He noted that the effectiveness of the party depends on strong collaboration from the state leadership to the grassroots.

"Our strength lies in our unity. Every executive, whether at the state, senatorial, local government, or ward level, has a vital role to play. No officer should be neglected because every contribution is essential to building a stronger and more successful party," he said.

The meeting featured robust discussions and strategic brainstorming on key issues affecting the party, with participants exploring practical approaches to strengthening internal administration, enhancing grassroots mobilization, expanding membership, improving voter engagement, and coordinating campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.

Party leaders also reviewed plans for effective communication and organizational development, emphasizing the need for discipline, commitment, and collective responsibility in advancing the party's vision.

Participants expressed optimism about the NDC's growing acceptance across Lagos State and beyond, affirming their readiness to work together to secure victory for the party's candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge by party executives to remain united and focused on building a stronger political movement capable of providing credible leadership and good governance for Nigerians.
