Kwame Nkrumah remains the greatest leader Ghana has ever had and we cannot dispute that, but He was not a Saint entirely.
And General KOTOKA may be forever etched in our history as a villain but He was not entirely evil.
Before and after the May 9th 1956 Plebiscite that added to Ghana, Nkrumah allegedly sent some Chiefs of Hohoe into exile for opposing his idea of TransVolta joining Ghana, and also because they supported the which was the main opposition for the CPP which was in power then.
The Chiefs had to escape into exile in neighboring countries like Togo and were brought back by General Kotoka after the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah.
And I hear the wife of General Kotoka comes from Gbi-Kpeme as well and so He took interest in the case and sent an entourage to bring back the Chiefs from exile…
The people of GBI in Hohoe therefore built a statue for General Kotoka as a way to show appreciation for bringing them back from exile.
This post is to tell the story that Kotoka was not an entirely bad person. He did some good things despite being one of the reasons why we lost the bright future Nkrumah envisioned.
And this post is not to speak against the fact that they would change the name of the KOTOKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT to the ACCRA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. It’s unfair to the legacy of Nkrumah that he developed an Airport and the name of the man who overthrew him is on the Airport.
Just saying we have stories where General Kotoka remains celebrated. He wasn’t all evil and He would still remain a traitor for his role in the overthrow of Nkrumah, but y’all cut him some slack.
This is what’s on my mind…
