KWARA REBUILDERS WRAPS UP 7-DAY FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN THREE (3) COMMUNITIES

Pro-democracy group Kwara Rebuilders on Friday rounded off its 7-day campaign aimed at raising awareness on flooding and environmental sustainability among residents of the state.

The campaign, which ended with an outreach to flood-prone communities in Ilorin, targeted Adualere, Isale Koko-Dumo, and Isale Asa areas.

According to a press statement by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Abdullah Abdulganiy, the group has in the past 6 days ramped up sensitisation on both traditional and new media with the airing of jingles and publication of various graphics contents.

Tagged , the campaign was in partnership with the Kwara State Ministry of Environment, commencing on Thursday, October 3.

Arriving at the three communities, the group embarked on a house-to-house engagement with heads of families, and stakeholders of the community.

“The message we have brought to the communities for our outreach is safe environmental practices. As people, we need to take action. We should fulfil our own part by adopting safe environmental practices. This way we can support the government to tackle the perennial flooding issue,” Kwara Rebuilders’ Publicity Secretary, Abdullah Abdulganiy, said on the sidelines of the outreach.

“Our group will continue to work with the government to deepen understanding of the flood crisis, and enlighten our people on precautions, including steps to take in the event of flooding so as to prevent loss of lives and property,” he added.

“We have engaged the community members, and shared a pamphlet containing important information on flooding with them. We are optimistic that this effort will inspire them to take action and adopt safe and responsible environmental practices. We are really grateful for the warm welcome and understanding from the communities.”

Chairman of Ifedapo community in Isale Koko, Mallam Abdullateef Hamzah, in his remarks, appealed to the state government to continue with their intervention of dredging the dam and waterways to tackle the flooding issue.

He said the community association will step up engagement with members on the need to be responsible and exhibit safe environmental practices.

He thanked Kwara Rebuilders for the outreach, noting continuous engagement of the people will yield necessary impacts.

The group said it will compile the observations and feedback from the campaign in a report which will be submitted to the Kwara State Government for action.

Kwara Rebuilders launches 7-day campaign to raise awareness on flooding, environmental sustainability

Pro-democracy group Kwara Rebuilders has announced a 7-day campaign to raise awareness on flooding and environmental sustainability among residents of the state.

The announcement is contained in a statement issued by Publicity Secretary of the group, Abdullah Abdulganiy, on Wednesday.

According to him, the campaign tagged will include online discussions, media promotions, and engagements with flood-prone communities across the state.

“We have seen incidents of flooding in Borno, Yobe, and Niger in the last one month. There have also been heads-up from relevant authorities on impending flooding incidents in the country. Our people need to be aware and prepare adequately for this.

“We need to up our preventive strategies instead of responding after the damage had been done. This is what the campaign is all about,” the statement read.

Abdulganiy said the 7-day campaign is in partnership with the Kwara State Ministry of Environment.

It will run from Thursday, October 3 to Thursday, October 10.

“For these 7 days, we will work to deepen understanding of the flood crisis, and enlighten our people on precautions, including steps to take in the event of flooding so as to prevent loss of lives and property," Abdullah noted.

Alliances against revamp of Kwara Hotel dead on arrival: Kwara Rebuilders

• Condemns sponsored activism, incitement

The coordinated campaign to stampede the Kwara State government to back down on the renovation and upgrade of the state's iconic legacy, Kwara Hotel, is dead on arrival, a pro-democracy group, Kwara Rebuilders, has noted.

In a statement issued by co- founder Tobi Matthew, on Friday in Ilorin, Kwara Rebuilders said it condemns what now appears like a strategic alliance between the main opposition PDP, Crystal Group and ENetSUD to prevent the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration from renovating Kwara Hotel, which has been in a state of disrepair for so long and left without meaningful investments by the previous administrations in the state.

“We are not surprised by the antics of Kwara PDP. This is a party whose leaders failed to make any meaningful investment in Kwara Hotel while at the helms of affairs. They had the opportunity to do so, but preferred to fritter away resources. Their recent actions and posturing expose them as a retrogressive party,” the statement read.

“For Crystal Group, they are at liberty to exercise their rights to seek a redress in court. We are just worried about their desperation which is evident in the series of media trials and onslaughts they have since launched against the government. We therefore ask: Is personal interest supposed to trump state interest? The government has been trusted with the mandate of the people, and it will act in their best interests as far as state matters are concerned.”

Kwara Rebuilders said it has also noted the actions and posturing of a civil society group ENetSUD on the Kwara Hotel upgrade, saying it falls so short of the standards expected of a CSO.

“ENetSUD have always claimed to be neutral, but the demeanor of their coordinator Dr. Abdullateef Alagbonsi on this Kwara Hotel subject matter from the beginning points to a bias. They started their campaign on Kwara Hotel with sensationalism, whipping sentiments against the government, even when they are yet to point out any malpractice in the deal.

“It is a constitutional right in a democracy to express one's opinions about government policies and activities. This is however not a freedom to promote incitement and hate against the government. This is what ENetSuD is currently doing, and they need to be careful. ENetSuD cannot run a parallel government. They either be a sane and responsible CSO or register as a political party to contest for political offices. We see how mainstream CSOs like YIAGA Africa, BudGIT operate in Nigeria. They don't grandstand or engage in frivolities just to be in the news.”

The statement urged Governor AbdulRazaq to ignore the distractions by PDP, Crystal Group and ENetSUD, saying Kwarans cannot wait to see the Kwara Hotel renovated and upgraded.

The group meanwhile told the Governor to entertain meaningful contributions that can add quality to the upgrade project, reiterating that ENetSUD, PDP and Crystal Group have only been engaging in theatrics so far.
