World ALL Awareness Day

Today, we raise awareness about Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) — a type of blood cancer that develops when abnormal lymphoblasts multiply rapidly in the blood and bone marrow.

ALL can affect both children and adults and its symptoms may sometimes resemble other common illnesses. Early recognition, proper diagnosis, and timely treatment can make a meaningful difference.

On this ALL Awareness Day, let’s encourage people to learn the signs, seek medical attention when symptoms persist, and support those living with the disease.

Awareness brings understanding. Understanding encourages early action.

Blood cancer is more than a diagnosis. Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family and a story that deserves to be heard.

Blood cancers are cancers that affect the blood-forming tissues, bone marrow or cells of the immune system. They include leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, among others. �

One of the reasons awareness matters is that some warning signs can easily be mistaken for common illnesses. Depending on the type of blood cancer, symptoms may include:
Persistent tiredness or weakness
Unexplained weight loss
Frequent infections or fever
Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
Persistent night sweats
Swollen lymph nodes or unexplained lumps
Shortness of breath
Bone pain or discomfort

These symptoms do not automatically mean someone has cancer, as they can occur with other conditions too. However, symptoms that persist or are unusual should not simply be ignored. Speaking with a healthcare professional can help determine the cause and whether further tests are needed. �

This month, let us do more than raise awareness.
Let us learn the facts.
Let us encourage people to seek medical attention when something doesn't feel right.
Let us support those going through treatment.
Let us stand with families carrying the weight of a diagnosis.
And let us remind people living with blood cancer that they are not alone.

LOOKING BACK AT WHAT WE’VE DONE AND LOOKING AHEAD TO WHAT’S NEXT

Earlier this year, around April, we had the opportunity to take our medical outreach to an IDP camp, where we provided health education, basic medical support, screening and care to people in the community.

This video is a reminder of why we do what we do.
For us, an outreach is more than a day of activities. It is about meeting people where they are, listening to their needs and making healthcare and health information more accessible to those who may otherwise struggle to reach them.

On 22 September, we will be going out again, we are preparing to bring the same spirit of service to the same community, but we cannot do it alone.

Every outreach comes with real needs medical supplies, medications, logistics, transportation and other resources that help us serve people effectively.

HELP ABUBAKAR CONTINUE HIS LYMPHOMA TREATMENT

Abubakar Musa Mailafiya is living with lymphoma and need support to complete treatment.

Unfortunately, due to financial challenges, he could not continue his treatment at the time.

His condition later relapsed, making it necessary for him to resume treatment.

With renewed support, Abubakar has now completed 2 cycles of chemotherapy, but 4 more cycles is retaining.

He has already come a long way, and he is determined to keep fighting. What he needs now is the financial support to continue and complete his treatment.

REPORT ON LCPI’S PARTICIPATION IN THE CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS’ MID-TERM HEALTH REFORM ENGAGEMENT

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Leukaemia CarePlus Initiative (LCPI) participated in the Civil Society Organisations’ Mid-Term Health Reform Engagement held in Abuja on 14 September 2026.

The engagement brought together CSOs, government, development partners including the Cordinating Minister of health and Social welfare Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the media and other stakeholders to review progress, identify gaps and discuss ways to improve Nigeria’s health system.

2.0 KEY ISSUES DISCUSSED

Key issues relevant to LCPI included:

- Access to healthcare: Improving access to quality and affordable healthcare, especially for vulnerable and underserved communities.
- Health financing: Reducing out-of-pocket costs and strengthening financial protection for patients.
- Primary healthcare: Ensuring functional facilities with trained health workers, essential medicines, diagnostics and effective referral systems.
- Equity: Addressing healthcare inequalities affecting rural, low-income, displaced and hard-to-reach populations.
- Community participation: Strengthening the role of CSOs and communities in health awareness, advocacy and accountability.

3.0 RELEVANCE TO LCPI

The engagement reinforced the need for continued advocacy for people living with blood and lymphatic cancers, particularly in underserved communities.

LCPI identified the importance of strengthening:

- Blood cancer awareness and early detection.
- Access to affordable diagnosis and treatment.
- Patient support and financial protection.
- Community-based health education and outreach.
- Collaboration with government, healthcare providers and CSOs.
- Evidence-based advocacy for improved cancer care.
