New month. New possibilities.

As we step into June, after moments of rest, reflection, celebration, and return, we carry forward renewed energy, fresh opportunities, and the courage to keep building toward the futures we envision.

At IWEI, we are reminded that meaningful change is rarely born from a single leap. It grows through persistence, collective effort, hope, and the everyday decision to keep moving forward.

May this month bring renewal in our communities, strength in our pursuits, and opportunities for women and girls to continue growing, leading, dreaming, and thriving.

Here’s to June and to all the small and steady steps that shape brighter futures.

ATTENTION!!!

You have a message from the children in our safe spaces.

This Children’s Day, they left their thumbprints and added their voices to one simple message: We are children. We have the right to be protected, to learn, and to be heard.

Our job is simply to deliver the message and ask: What are you doing to ensure the children around you are safe, learning, and able to speak up and be listened to?

This Children’s Day, our scholars have a poem to share with you. Through their voices, they remind us that every child deserves safety, education, dignity, and the freedom to dream without fear.

At Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative, we believe children are not only the future, but people with voices, ideas, fears, brilliance, and endless possibilities right now.

As we celebrate today, we also hold space for children whose realities are shaped by conflict, displacement, captivity, poverty, and interrupted dreams. May we continue to build communities and systems where every child can learn, grow, and be protected.

Happy Children’s Day from all of us at IWEI.

Eid Mubarak from all of us at Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative.

This year’s Eid feels especially meaningful as it coincides with a time set aside to celebrate children, their dreams, their safety, and their right to grow in freedom and dignity.

As we celebrate with loved ones, we also hold in our thoughts children across Nigeria who are unable to experience the fullness of joy, safety, education, and care that every child deserves. May this season remind us all of our collective responsibility to build a country where every child can live, learn, and thrive without fear.

Wishing you and your loved ones peace, reflection, and a blessed Eid.

A few days ago, we held a learning and sustainability dialogue to mark the end of the Justice for All (II) project.

But more than closing a project, the gathering became an opportunity to reflect on what had shifted and what still needs to happen to ensure justice becomes more accessible across our communities.

The room brought together government representatives, traditional leaders, advocates, media stakeholders, and community actors. And everyone seemed to arrive carrying something: a question, an experience, a challenge, an idea, or a responsibility.

Because advancing awareness of the Kano State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2019 was never simply about sharing information. It was about participation. About people understanding their rights well enough to speak about them, question unlawful treatment, exchange ideas, and take ownership of the protections and freedoms available to them under the law.

Through testimonies, stakeholder reflections, the screening of Turba (our original screenplay on the ACJL), the unveiling of Rakiya 2, and messages left on the dialogue banner, the event became a reminder that awareness can do more than inform. It can create space for conversation, strengthen accountability, and inspire people to see justice as something they can shape too.

Last week, we didn’t just talk about justice, we watched it take shape in a room that brought grassroots advocates and policymakers side by side.

From paralegals to government representatives, traditional leaders to media stakeholders, every voice had a place at the Justice for All (II) Dialogue.

Supported by RoLAC, in partnership with the EU and International IDEA.

Here’s a glimpse into the moments that shaped the day.

What does justice have to do with education?

A new paper by the GEM Report Unesco, Namati, and the Grassroots Justice Network explores how education and justice shape one another.

At a time when inequality, conflict, and discrimination are hard to ignore—and the rule of law is in decline—‘Education and justice: Learning to build just societies’ shows how education can help people understand and defend their rights, navigate legal systems, and reduce vulnerability to discrimination and abuse.

It also demonstrates that exclusion, discrimination, and weak justice systems continue to prevent millions from accessing education.

From peace education to legal empowerment, the paper argues that learning is central to building just societies.
