Dear friends and donors,
Due to so many financial constraints, director Laura Sharpe made the difficult choice to close Shield City. We are no longer taking new clients. This was obviously a heart breaking choice. We had one last huge goodbye party at the center and got to say goodbye to so many good people! Please visit our website ro learn more about the closure (see link in bio). It has truly been an honor to serve the community of Kano and see such rapid changes in many of our children. Laura Sharpe moved to Albania with her children to take a steady job in special education.

We will miss all of you!! Thank you and have a blessed 2025.

One more amazing training tomorrow for our parents! Mothers and fathers of autistic children hear powerful lectures on how to connect with their child. While parents learn, we are throwing a stuffed toy party for the kids! With stuffies from , our Shield City tutors will play and assemble little teddy bears with the kids.

Shield City is kind of off grid. We are powered off solar for day use and generator for nighttime! Yes, in order to stabilize our center for basic daily operations, we use a combination of these alternative energy sources. Nigeria loses power up to a dozen times a day, often for several hours at a time. Several times this year, we've lost power for more than five days. We have a sturdy set of panels fixed to our roof, that do very well with all the sun we get in Kano (which is located in the Sahel region, closer to the Saharan desert).

Our constant generation of power has another helpful function: during these city-wide outages, our mothers are bring their cell phone chargers and charge up while their child is in play therapy.

We've considered purchasing an air conditioner for our inner chambers, because temperatures in Kano are consistently in the 90s to 100s. And it gets seriously hot inside our building. However, the overall power wattage consumed by an air conditioner would be too much for our regenerative solar panels.

Thank goodness for solar power😀😁😍

Malnutrition is real. Little Usman, 1, has cerebral palsy and is struggling to swallow, which limits his food intake. Shield City has partnered with Doctors Without Borders to offer continued physical therapy for children with malnutrition. Usman has been gaining some weight back with our care. His family is using a nutrition mix from Shield City to help him gain weight. We love you Usman!!😀😃
