Humanitarian action has many faces. Different roles. One shared purpose: serving communities.

On this Humanitarian Day 2026, we join the global community in recognising the people and teams working alongside communities to advance dignity, protection, health and inclusion.

From community engagement and protection to health education, TB response, case management and psychosocial support, our teams work to strengthen access to essential services, amplify community voices and support locally led solutions.

Behind every intervention are people who listen, respond, advocate and remain committed to communities, especially those facing barriers to essential services and opportunities.

Today, we recognise the dedication of our Education & Protection Officers, TB Champions, DR TB Peer Supporters, Field Officers, Case Management Officers, volunteers, community structures and partners whose collective efforts help turn humanitarian commitments into meaningful action.

Last week, women and caregivers across communities in Zango and Kankia LGAs, Katsina State, came together as part of activities commemorating World Breastfeeding Week 2026.

Through community drama and interactive discussions, participants explored the importance of breastfeeding and learned practical ways to support appropriate breastfeeding practices.

The activity provided an engaging platform for women to ask questions, share experiences, and strengthen their knowledge of breastfeeding to promote the health and well-being of mothers and children.

Today, we are honoured to join the Kano State Ministry of Health for a press briefing commemorating International Youth Day 2026 and World Breastfeeding Week 2026, bringing attention to important health priorities for young people, mothers, and children across the state.

The briefing was led by the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Health, Pharm. Aminu Bashir, on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Health. He highlighted the availability of youth-friendly health services and encouraged young people to remain focused, make informed decisions, and take advantage of available health services.

The briefing also highlighted concerns around breastfeeding practices in Kano State. Findings from a 2024 survey indicated low levels of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding, reinforcing the need for continued sensitization on the importance of breastfeeding for the health, nutrition, and development of children.

The Ministry called on workplaces to provide breastfeeding-friendly spaces that support mothers to continue breastfeeding, while urging the media to sustain public awareness and help ensure that accurate breastfeeding information reaches everyone, particularly rural communities where access to information can be limited.

As partners in health and community development, we remain committed to supporting efforts that strengthen awareness, promote supportive environments, and improve health outcomes for women, children, and young people across Kano State.

Every seed planted is an investment in healthier families and stronger communities.

Through the ECHO HIP Project in Katsina State, communities are taking the next step in the community gardening initiative by planting nutritious vegetables that will help improve household nutrition, strengthen food security, and support the fight against malnutrition.

Designed to benefit pregnant women, lactating mothers, and mothers of children with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), the gardens promote sustainable food production while encouraging community ownership and resilience.

Together, we are cultivating more than gardens, we are fostering healthier diets, stronger communities, and a more food-secure future.
