📖 Access to Information: The Key to Accountability

Every Nigerian has the constitutional right to request and obtain information from government bodies, ministries, agencies, and public institutions. This right is backed by the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act (2011), which was created to promote transparency, openness, and accountability in governance.

🔹 Why it Matters:

It prevents secrecy in government dealings.

It helps citizens understand how public funds are used.

It strengthens democracy by empowering citizens to demand answers.

🔹 Examples of Access to Information:

A citizen can request the budget for a community project (like a road, hospital, or school).

Journalists can demand official records to investigate corruption.

NGOs and civic groups can use it to track service delivery and expose abandoned projects.

🔹 Limitations:
While the right is broad, it does not cover sensitive areas such as national security, defense operations, or personal privacy. These restrictions exist to protect the state and individuals from harm.
