The scams may look different.

A fake investment.
A stolen identity.
A romance scam.
A gambling platform.

But behind them can be the same organized criminal networks, exploiting trafficked people to deceive victims around the world.

Celoha Nigeria Holds One-Day Roundtable Discussion to Commemorate World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

The Centre for Legal Orientation and Humanitarian Aid Initiative (CELOHA Nigeria) convened a one-day roundtable discussion to commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen collective efforts against human trafficking.

The roundtable brought together government stakeholders, social workers, students, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and other relevant actors** to discuss this year’s campaign theme, , and examine the growing risks associated with deceptive recruitment, online scams, exploitation, and trafficking.

The discussion provided a platform for participants to share experiences, insights, best practices, and practical approaches** to preventing trafficking, protecting victims and survivors, and improving referral and response mechanisms.

Participants also explored international standards and good practices in combating trafficking in persons, emphasizing the importance of a coordinated, survivor-centred and rights-based approach.

The roundtable highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society, communities, educational institutions and other stakeholders to identify emerging trafficking trends, raise public awareness, prevent exploitation and ensure that victims and survivors have access to appropriate protection, justice and support services.

CELOHA Nigeria remains committed to promoting **human rights, child protection, safe migration, prevention of trafficking, and meaningful stakeholder engagement** towards building safer and more resilient communities.

Together, we can expose the scam, protect people from exploitation, and ensure that no one is trapped behind the scam.

Following our community engagement session, we exchanged words of appreciation with the Wakilin Mai Unguwa of the Kwarin Sabu Community. During the discussion, he expressed his gratitude for our visit and reaffirmed the community's commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to safeguard children.

He also appealed for our continued support and long-term commitment to empowering and protecting adolescent girls in the community through child protection interventions, life skills development, awareness-raising, and access to safe and supportive environments. We reaffirmed our dedication to working with the community to promote the rights, safety, dignity, and well-being of every child, ensuring that the best interests of the child remain at the center of all our interventions.

Today, in my capacity as Chief of Operations of the Centre for Legal Orientation and Humanitarian Aid Initiative (CELOHA Nigeria) and Northern Nigeria Coordinator of the West Africa Network for the Protection of Children and Young Migrants (WAN Network), I conducted an assessment visit to Kwarin Sabu Community, Madobi Local Government Area, Kano State, to inspect the proposed implementation site for the MaceFitilaProject 💡.

The visit provided an opportunity to engage with the Village Head, community leaders, key stakeholders, women, adolescents, and children in meaningful discussions about the project's objectives and the community's priorities. Listening to community members—especially children and young people—is fundamental to ensuring that interventions are responsive, inclusive, and grounded in local realities.

The MaceFitilaProject 💡 is designed to empower adolescent girls and strengthen community-based child protection systems through integrated interventions focused on:

• Child Protection and safeguarding
• Livelihoods and vocational/skills acquisition
• Life skills and leadership development
• Children's rights and participation
• Prevention and response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
• Safe migration awareness and prevention of human trafficking
• Protection of children on the move and other vulnerable children
• Support and social inclusion for survivors of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF)

We appreciate the warm reception and commitment demonstrated by the traditional institution, community leaders, and residents of Kwarin Sabu. Their partnership and ownership are essential to creating a safer, more inclusive environment where every child and adolescent girl can thrive and reach her full potential.

Together, we are building resilient communities where the rights, dignity, protection, and empowerment of every child remain a shared responsibility.
