CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Safe Voices for Civic Accountability Project

Are you a young civic actor in Kano State passionate about advocacy, accountability, digital rights, or civic participation?

Smart Aid Initiative is inviting Gen Z activists, youth led organisation representatives, young journalists/content creators, CBO leaders, digital advocates, and human rights/accountability advocates to apply for a Two-Day Civic Space Resilience and Advocacy Training.

The training will strengthen young civic actors’ capacity to safely exercise and defend freedom of expression and peaceful association ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Who Can Apply:
Young people from Kano State who are:
• Gen Z activists
• Youth-led organisation representatives
• Young journalists/content creators
• CBO leaders
• Digital advocates
• Human rights/accountability advocates

In Saturday’s session, Faridha Salihu Lukman took our Cohort 1 fellows through a practical guide to fact checking in Nigeria’s digital space and the role young women can play in countering misinformation. The session offered practical insights on verifying information, navigating digital spaces responsibly, and using our voices in ways that inform rather than amplify harmful or misleading content.

What happens when misinformation spreads faster than the truth?

This Saturday, our WFDS Cohort 1 fellows will be learning from Faridha Salihu Lukman, a strategic communications professional working across communications, policy, governance, democracy and information integrity.

The session will focus on fact-checking in digital spaces and the important role young women can play in identifying misleading information, questioning what they see online, and helping others navigate an increasingly crowded information space.

What does it take to help young women become confident leaders in digital spaces?

Our latest blog explores the Women at the Front of the Digital Space Fellowship, a six-week programme bringing together 20 young women from Kaduna State to build skills in digital democracy, online safety, digital advocacy, misinformation and more.

But the goal goes beyond the 20 fellows. Through peer learning and step-down sessions, the knowledge gained is designed to reach even more young people in their communities.

Know your digital rights. Recognise the risks. Stand against technology facilitated gender based violence.

Saturday’s session with Hassana Maina took our Cohort 1 fellows beyond the screen, exploring how to recognise, respond to, and prevent technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). The session offered practical insights into creating safer digital spaces where women can participate, organise, disagree, lead, and remain visible without being driven out.

Because staying is also a form of resistance.

We are opening a call for a consultant to lead our first five-year strategic plan. This is a chance to shape the next chapter of a youth and women led organisation working on advance quality education, civic participation and digital equity across Nigeria.

We are looking for someone with a real track record of facilitating strategic planning with NGOs and turning that work into something boards actually use.
If you have guided an NGO through this process before and know how to turn a room full of ideas into a clear plan, we'd like to hear from you.

This Saturday, we welcome Hassana Maina, a dynamic lawyer, writer, and gender consultant with over a decade of experience advancing social change and gender focused development in Nigeria. Hassana will be taking our WFDS Cohort 1 fellows through “Beyond the Screen: Recognising, Responding to and Preventing Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TFGBV).”

The session will explore how technology facilitated gender based violence shows up in our digital spaces, how to recognise different forms of online harm, and practical ways to respond to and prevent it while creating safer and more inclusive digital spaces.

As part of our ongoing engagement to advance girls’ education in Kaduna State, our team paid a courtesy visit to the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), where we were warmly received by the Board Secretary Barrister Hassan Othman.

The visit was an opportunity to introduce the Girls’ Education Pathway (GEP) Project, supported by Malala Fund and discuss our plans to strengthen access to inclusive and gender-responsive education for girls across Kaduna State. Barrister Othman reaffirmed KADSUBEB’s commitment to supporting the project and shared the Board’s efforts to strengthen its focus on girls’ rights through a newly established department dedicated to promoting girls’ inclusion, rights, and access to education.

He also highlighted the Board’s willingness to support our efforts and work closely with us to ensure that girls have greater access to education and that their needs remain central to conversations around education in Kaduna State.

We appreciate Barrister Othman and the KADSUBEB team for the warm reception, meaningful conversation, and commitment to advancing better opportunities for girls.
