We are pleased to introduce Karsan Gabriel, a Tanzanian digital policy advocate and civic-tech innovator with over 8 years of experience working at the intersection of technology, democracy, governance, and youth participation. This week, Karsan will be taking our Cohort 1 fellows through “Foundations of Digital Democracy, Civic Participation and FOI.”

A great start to the Women at the Front of Digital Space (WFDS) Fellowship!

Our 20 young women from Kaduna State officially began their six-week virtual journey with an onboarding session filled with introductions, conversations, and excitement for what lies ahead. From getting to know one another to understanding what the fellowship is all about, it was a meaningful first step towards building knowledge, confidence, and safer digital spaces for women.

Last week in Accra Ghana, our Executive Director, Fareed Kamal Ibrahim joined fellow network members at the Vuka Network Regional Meeting for meaningful conversations on the state of civic space across the region.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to reflect on the challenges affecting civic participation, share experiences and lessons, and explore practical ways to strengthen and protect civic space for everyone.

For us, this is more than a meeting. It is part of our continued commitment to equipping young people with the civic skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to participate meaningfully in their communities and society.

We also recognize that creating a thriving civic space requires solidarity. By strengthening connections, sharing knowledge, and standing together as a network, we can better support one another and build a safer, more inclusive environment where young people can speak up, engage, and contribute to positive change.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn, and strengthen our collective efforts.

Together, we continue to build a stronger civic space, one where young people are not just participants but active voices in shaping the future.

Meet the 20 young women joining the first cohort of the Women at the Front of Digital Space (WFDS) Fellowship!

The Women at the Front of Digital Space (WFDS) Fellowship, supported by Digital Democracy Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa (DDISA), brings together bright and driven young women from Kaduna State for a six-week virtual training focused on digital democracy, online safety, digital advocacy, misinformation and disinformation response, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence awareness. Through learning, collaboration, and shared experiences, the fellows will have the opportunity to learn from one another, build new connections, ask questions, and gain the confidence to navigate digital spaces, amplify their voices, and create meaningful change.

We are excited to welcome Cohort 1 and can’t wait to see the ideas, conversations, and impact they bring to the digital space.

Looking back at the energy, ideas, and brilliant minds in the room, our International Youth Day was a powerful reminder of what happens when young leaders connect.

In collaboration with Stonetech Square, we brought together Gen Z content creators, communication officers, digital activists and influencers under our Communication and Behavioural Lab to enhance their capacities on strategic message design, fighting misinformation and disinformation and the essence of civic participation.

Through the masterclasses, participants explored how audience centred messaging can cut through the noise and inspire action, how to treat civic participation as a behaviour rather than a hashtag by diagnosing root causes and holding the right actors accountable, and why media literacy and evidence based storytelling are essential tools in navigating AI and deepfakes. They also recognised that investing in human skills is key to taking collective responsibility and driving meaningful change.
