Centre for Water and Environment Development (CWED)

Centre for Water and Environment Development (CWED) CWED committed to sustainable Development and the management of water and environment.

Centre for Water and Environment Development (CWED) was founded in 1998 by an independent research team which was primarily dedicated to Sustainable Water and Environmental Resources Development, with its headquarters in Kaduna State, Nigeria. It is registered as a non-governmental organization with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) since 2008. The Centre for Water and Environment Development

was established with the conviction that the environment and water resources are essential to human livelihood and sustainable development. The environment and water resources are two of the most essential resources for life and have a reciprocal relationship. The terrestrial and aquatic life requires good quality water in sufficient quantities for survival and productivity while the environment provides services that maintain water resources in a useable state for all sectors. However, the continuous degradation of the environment and water resources which is most often associated with the impacts of human activities and other related factors has lead to further decline of the living standards of a vast majority of the population especially in the developing world. The centre therefore seeks to address these problems amidst other numerous challenges.

Today, we celebrate the power of Engineering in shaping a better future for our world!

Engineering is not just about machines and buildings it is about solutions. From clean water systems to safe roads, from renewable energy to modern classrooms, engineers make life safer, easier, and more sustainable.

👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔧 Dear Students, we believe you can be the next generation of problem solvers.

✍️Engineering begins with curiosity:

1. How can we make our school environment cleaner?

2. How can we conserve water?

3. How can we design solutions to reduce waste?

4. How can technology improve learning?

🎉 Celebrating CWED at 18! 🎉
As we commemorate CWED at 18, our commitment to advancing School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE) remains sustained, strategic, and innovation-driven.

For nearly two decades, CWED has continued to strengthen hygiene promotion in schools by equipping students with practical knowledge and hands-on skills through the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) approach. This initiative fosters sustainable hygiene practices and promotes local production of hygiene products empowering students to become active agents of change.

This milestone is not just a celebration of years, but a reaffirmation of our resolve to institutionalize school-based WASH interventions, promote positive behavior change, and raise a generation of hygiene champions who will drive healthier learning environments across Kaduna State and beyond.

This strategic engagement emerged as a key outcome of the CWED World Toilet Day 2025 Workshop, themed “Sanitation in a Changing World We Will Always Need the Toilet.”
The meeting marks a significant milestone in strengthening coordination, dialogue, and collective action within Kaduna State’s WASH sector. We are proud to be at the forefront driving this momentum and contributing meaningfully to sustainable sanitation improvements across the state.

Not all heroes wear capes some simply wash their hands with soap and water.

Clean hands are today’s heroes because they truly save lives. At Centre for Water and Environment Development-CWED, we believe that every person deserves access to clean water, soap, and the knowledge to practice good hygiene every day.

As part of our commitment to environmental and health education, CWED continues to sensitize learners/communities and establish Eco Clubs in schools and communities inspiring young people to become champions of hygiene, sanitation, and environmental stewardship.

From classrooms to
clinics and everywhere in between, handwashing with soap remains one of the simplest and most powerful ways to stop the spread of diseases and protect our communities.

We’ve made progress toward a future where everyone can live in clean, healthy environments but our journey isn’t over yet. On this Global Handwashing Day, let’s all be handwashing heroes and continue spreading the message, clean hands save lives.
