๐ Our Story: From a Joke to a Movement!
Some of you asked how it all began! hereโs the untold story of DNA Group Nigeria: part nostalgia, part laughter, and all heart. ๐
๐ถ 2008 โ The โAlcoholic Familyโ DNA started as a joke among friends listening to West Coast hip-hop in a leaving room of a semi-urban town of Southern Kaduna. From that day, we called ourselves the โAlcoholic Familyโ referencing one of the lines from the rap song, not exactly the name of a health movement, right? ๐
Then one night, out of nowhere (the kind of night when ideas show up uninvited), someone said,๐ โWhat if we turn this into something positive?โAnd that was it!!! a spark that would change everything.
๐ The Night Call That Changed Everything before you could say DNA, four of us were on one of those good old โnight calls- EXTRA COOLโ back when free midnight minutes were the real social media.
That night wasnโt just random chatter, it was a presentation our the IDEA, a brainstorm session that changed our path. We talked about how the name โAlcoholic Familyโ sounded cool and funnyโฆ but deep down, we all knew we wanted it to mean something. What if we used our stories to help others? And right there between laughter, honesty, and that shaky midnight network the idea was born.๐ก MAD โ Make A Differenceโฆ our slogan was born.
๐ณ ABU Gardens โ Where Conversations Grew three of us were students at the legendary Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Naturally Ahead! ๐ณ๐ฌOur gatherings were unscripted at the Love Garden, the basketball court, or anywhere with shadeโฆ Weโd start with music, random tech talk, and talk moviesโฆ and somehow end up talking about real stuff! substance we use, choices, and change.Weโd tease each other (โthe highest user gets bragging rightsโ) but always ended with laughter, care, and the quiet reminder that we could do better together.
The conversations didnโt end after school. They evolved. As Gen-Y, most of us didnโt grow up with โopen dialogueโ at home it was more like: no carry-overs, no conversations, and definitely no democracy. ๐So we created what we wished we had: a safe space for honesty, growth, and empathy.
๐ซ 2016โ2018 โ From Talk to ActionIn Kaduna, we began visiting schools, talking to young people about substance use, s*x education, and career dreams. Our funding? Letโs just say it came powered by friendship, passion, and a touch of magic.
โจThe team grew, the purpose deepened, and the joke that started it all had quietly become a movement.
Today, DNA Group Nigeria stands on that same foundation honesty, empathy, and shared experience. What began as a joke among friends has become a community that listens, learns, and lifts others. And yes, weโre still MAD enough to believe we can make a difference. ๐
