Last Saturday, our founder represented Kada SMEs Hub at the invitation of Siyarwa, Zaria, an e-commerce platform founded by Ajee Alfa , to speak on “SMEs Digitalisation and the Future of E-Commerce in Northern Nigeria.”

Beyond digital marketing, social commerce, reputation management and scaling, one message I tried to emphasise was the importance of continuous training and retraining for SMEs. Technology and the way people do business are changing very fast. What worked yesterday may not be enough tomorrow.

I also raised a concern about Zaria. From some of the SME workshops where I have been invited to speak, the turnout has sometimes been discouraging. For a city with our population, history, businesses and entrepreneurial potential, I believe we are still behind when it comes to taking advantage of opportunities for business training and retraining. We need to do more.

One interesting part of the event was meeting Dr Kabiru Ishaq, Director of Communications at SINTS, another e-commerce platform. The last time we interacted that much was sometime in the late 1990s when we travelled to Birnin Gwari for a Musabaqa (Qur’anic Recitation competition). Something went wrong at the secondary school where we were camped, and we almost got beaten. We eventually had to seek accommodation at the Emir of Birnin Gwari’s palace. 😂

Kabiru didn’t recognise me immediately, but the moment I mentioned Birnin Gwari, the memories came back. What happened that time wasn’t funny at all. 😂

It was also good seeing Dr Kiru and Abdulkadir Imam at the event.

My appreciation to Alfa, the Siyarwa team, the SINTS team, and everyone who participated. More importantly, I hope we continue to create these opportunities and that our SMEs take advantage of them. Digitalisation is moving fast, and we cannot afford to be left behind.

Happy Birthday, Prof. Abdulrauf Aliyu

Prof. has a background in Economics, but to borrow from Senator Dino, he is urban and an intellectually mobile fine boy who has also found a comfortable home in Strategic Management. See steeze full everywhere in this picture, the one wey don go Harvard. 😂.

Oga Abdulrauf is one of those people whose contribution to Kada SMEs Hub goes beyond appearing on the programme as a facilitator. He works with the team in preparing for every edition of Kada SMEs Bootcamp, contributing to the selection and reframing of topics to make sure our conversations address the real challenges facing SMEs. On the day of the event, while others see a facilitator, we see someone who is equally concerned about making sure nothing goes wrong.

He is also consistently active in the mentorship aspect of our programmes, engaging entrepreneurs beyond his presentations and helping them think through their businesses. That willingness to share knowledge and remain accessible is one of the reasons we value his place in the Kada SMEs Hub family.

Happy birthday, Oga Abdulrauf. We appreciate your contribution to what we are building and wish you many more years of impact, good health, and greater accomplishments.

One thing I am certain of is that the late Dr Umar Sani Bebeji is among the very few people I know who have said or done so much in their chosen field at such a young age before leaving this world. Yet, generations of people will continue to benefit from his contributions to knowledge and different sectors of society as though he had lived for more than eighty years. His footprints are visible in SMEs, the ABU Moot Court, legal scholarship on the internet and electronic scams, numerous professional associations, several boards, academia, government, and in the lives of many SMEs he advised freely without expecting anything in return.

For context, the entire conversation at Kada SMEs Bootcamp 4.0 May 2026 revolved around one central idea: Build to Last. That was why Dr Bebeji kept emphasizing issues such as shareholding, boards of directors, partnerships, and proper business structure, even though most of the participants were owners of small and medium sized businesses. He understood that if Northern businesses must outlive their founders, they must be built differently.

If you pay attention to the way many of us think and run businesses in this part of the world, you will agree with Bebeji that we need to build more businesses around partnerships rather than individuals. He also stressed the importance of having a good lawyer, accountant, finance expert, and other professionals around every serious business. Looking back now, I realise that while speaking at Bootcamp 4.0, he had already laid part of the foundation for Kada SMEs Bootcamp 5.0 and beyond.

I am sharing this video not to make Adedamola Ilori and Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad emotional (especially the moderator, Ahmad, who was throwing questions to be sure the audience understood Bebeji) as they were the last speakers to share the panel with him during our Bootcamp in May, but to appreciate the quality of conversations they had together on building sustainable businesses. I also want to sincerely thank the countless people who have called, sent messages, and reached out since the news of his passing. I am particularly grateful to my personal friends, friends of Kada SMEs Hub, our facilitators, partners, and participants whose prayers, kind words, and support have been deeply comforting at this difficult time.

May Allah grant Dr Umar Sani Bebeji Aljannatul Firdaus, forgive his shortcomings, and make his countless contributions to humanity heavy on his scale of good deeds. Allah Ya sa su a mizanin alherinsa. Ameen.

Happy Birthday Dr. Tijjani Ahmad

Wallahi, if there's anything I can confidently say is my strength, it's the people (read: friends) around me.

Tijjani Ahmad is a dependable friend and more. He is always just a call away whenever I inform him about Kada’s programs.

At Kada SMEs Bootcamp 4.0, he featured on two different sessions—moderating one, and serving as a mentor where some of our participants asked many questions relating to finance and other business challenges.

Thank you for your continued support for the growth of SMEs in Northern Nigeria, especially your work in helping entrepreneurs better understand taxation, compliance, and doing business the right way.
