"I've become an advocate of the voiceless women. Of women with disabilities."

You're supporting inclusivity programmes for women with disabilities, led by champions like Ramatu ๐Ÿ’›

Last year, the African Disability Protocl became legally binding, protecting the rights of more than 80 million people across the continent. And in Kaduna State, Nigeria, people like Ramatu are leading the way.

Ramatu, who was born with a disability, runs free workshops through the Sightsavers-supported programme, discussing the barriers women with disabilities face in accessing sexual health and family planning services, and opening up conversations.

Find out more about Ramatu's work in our latest Focus Magazine.

Emergency Travel Advice for People with Disability Travellers During Global Crises

When conflicts, natural disasters, or sudden travel disruptions occur, travellers can quickly find themselves stranded or uncertain about what to do next. For disabled travellers or those with medical conditions, these situations can feel even more overwhelming.
If you are currently travelling and feeling anxious, remember that support systems do exist and there are practical steps you can take to stay as safe and prepared as possible.

1. Try to Stay Calm and Focus on What You Can Control
In a crisis it is completely normal to feel frightened or overwhelmed. Try to focus on the immediate steps you can take rather than worst-case scenarios.
Take things one step at a time and concentrate on the practical things you can manage right now.

2. Contact Your Embassy or Consulate
Your embassy or consulate is the most important source of help if you are abroad during a crisis.
They can provide:
โ€ข Safety updates and travel guidance
โ€ข Information about evacuation or emergency flights
โ€ข Assistance with lost passports or documents
โ€ข Advice about local safety conditions
If possible, register your presence with your embassy so they know you are in the country.

3. Keep Essential Documents Accessible
Always keep important documents close to you rather than packed away in luggage.
These include:
โ€ข Passport
โ€ข Travel insurance information
โ€ข Medical documents
โ€ข Medication list and prescriptions
โ€ข Emergency contact details
โ€ข Travel bookings and itinerary
Having everything easily available can make a stressful situation much easier to manage.

4. Ensure You Have Access to Medication
For travellers with medical conditions, medication is one of the most important essentials.
Try to:
โ€ข Keep medication in your carry-on bag
โ€ข Carry a doctorโ€™s letter explaining your prescriptions
โ€ข Keep a list of your medications and dosages
โ€ข Bring extra medication if travel disruptions are possible
If medication runs low, your embassy or local pharmacy may be able to help.

5. Inform Travel Staff About Your Needs
If you require assistance, make sure staff are aware of your situation.
This may include:
โ€ข Airport or airline assistance teams
โ€ข Hotel staff
โ€ข Cruise ship staff
โ€ข Train or transport operators
They can often help with mobility support, priority boarding, luggage assistance, or locating accessible routes.

6. Protect and Track Mobility Equipment
If you travel with mobility equipment such as:
โ€ข Wheelchairs
โ€ข Mobility scooters
โ€ข Walking aids
Ensure that staff know the equipment belongs to you and confirm where it is located during travel disruptions.
Clearly labelling equipment can help prevent it being misplaced.

7. Keep Communication Open
Try to stay connected with:
โ€ข Family and friends
โ€ข Your embassy
โ€ข Airlines or travel providers
โ€ข Local authorities
Keeping people informed of your situation can help ensure you receive assistance if needed.

8. Follow Official Information Sources
During a crisis, rumours and misinformation can spread quickly online.
Always try to rely on official sources, such as:
โ€ข Government travel advice
โ€ข Embassy announcements
โ€ข Airline updates
โ€ข Local emergency services
Accurate information helps you make calm and sensible decisions.

9. Prioritise Your Safety and Health
In uncertain situations, focus on the most important things first:
1. Personal safety
2. Medical needs and medication
3. Important documents
4. Communication with support networks
Everything else can be addressed once you are safe.

10. Remember That Support Systems Exist

Although global crises can feel frightening and chaotic, governments, airlines, embassies, and travel companies usually work together to assist travellers.
Many people eventually return home safely once travel routes reopen or emergency assistance becomes available.

Try to remain calm, stay informed, and seek help when needed.
A Message for Travellers

If you are currently caught in a difficult travel situation, please remember that you are not alone. Help may take time, but support networks do exist.

Taking practical steps, staying calm, and keeping communication open can make a very difficult situation more manageable.
