Happy International Literacy Day 2025

We believe that literacy is more than just the ability to read and write. For us and our partners, it is a pathway to dignity, opportunity, and a brighter future.

This year’s International Literacy Day reminds us that every child deserves the chance to unlock the power of words, to imagine, to question, and to grow.

Through our work with Almajiri and out-of-school children in underserved communities, we have seen firsthand how literacy transforms lives, giving children confidence, hope, and the tools to reduce their vulnerabilities.

From foundational reading and numeracy, to hygiene support, to nutrition and vocational skills, we remain committed to building a holistic system that nurtures both the minds and futures of children.

Today, we join the world in reaffirming that literacy is a right, not a privilege. Together, we can make sure no child is left behind.

Five months ago, 60 children in Rigasa and Unguwan Muazu walked into our literacy spaces with hesitant steps. Some could not recognise the letters of the alphabet. Many had never held a proper book of their own.

Today, those same children can read simple words, write their names, and solve basic numeracy tasks.
What has changed most is the light in their eyes, the confidence to raise a hand when a teacher asks a question, the pride of reading and reciting aloud and the joy of solving a sum correctly to get a round of applause.

At Vision Books4All, we saw that literacy cannot thrive in isolation. We saw how hunger distracted the children from their learning, how poor hygiene made them vulnerable to illness, infections and particularly, scabies and ringworm infections for our almajiri children.

So we added meals to their days, ensuring learning happens on full stomachs. We taught them handwashing, oral hygiene, and provided basic supplies like soaps and buckets, toothbrushes and tooth pastes, detergents to wash their clothes and small acts that restore their dignity and protect their health.

The result?
Children who once sat silently now argue playfully over the right spelling of a word. Their faces that were once clouded with fatigue now brighten when meals are served.
Vulnerabilities that once weighed them down are giving way to resilience.

This is what Vision Books4All stands for, what we stand for. Not just teaching letters and numbers, but nurturing whole children: healthy, curious, and hopeful.

Literacy is Power. Literacy is Freedom.

At Vision Books4All, we are not just teaching children how to read and write; we are also breaking chains of silence, poverty, and exclusion.

- A child who learns to read gains a voice.
- A child who understands numbers gains confidence.
- A child who eats well gains the strength to learn.
- A child who learns and practices good hygiene gains dignity and health.

Every lesson, every book, every shared meal is a spark lighting up futures that once seemed impossible.

Our children are not just students. They are future leaders, creators, and dreamers. And every word they master brings them closer to rewriting their story.

Because when one child learns, an entire community rises.

Join us. Support us. Believe in them. Together, we are changing the world, one child, one word at a time.

Program Milestone Reached!

We’re excited to announce that Vision Books4All has officially delivered 120 hours of learning to the children in our program!

That’s 120 hours of:
- Literacy – helping children read and write with confidence
- Hygiene – teaching healthy habits that promote wellbeing
- Numeracy – building strong foundations in math and problem-solving
- Nutrition – providing healthy, nutritious meals for every child every day, securing their next meals

Week by week, lesson by lesson, we’re seeing real transformation, and it’s all thanks to our amazing team and community supporters who make this possible.

We’re just getting started. Onward to even more impact!

Midline Update: Vision Books4All Basic Literacy Program

We’re halfway through our journey, and the impact is already visible!

Since launching the Basic Literacy Program in underserved communities of Rigasa and Unguwan Muazu, our learners (Almajiri and out-of-school children) have made tremendous progress in foundational reading, writing, numeracy and hygiene.

Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:

✅ 60 children enrolled
✅ Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) accelerated literacy program implemented successfully to midline
✅ 208 hours of foundational literacy, numeracy and hygiene learning
✅ 26 Classes held
✅ 15 weeks of learning
✅ 1,820 nutritious meals distributed
✅ 1,000+ hygiene supplies distributed (soap, toothpaste, detergent & more)
✅ Improved attendance
✅ Children now read simple sentences and write basic words independently
✅ Increased community engagement and parental interest
✅ Celebrated International Children's Day
✅ Conducted a sports event to keep children active
✅ Participated in the Read-A-Create with Dr. Namse Udosen in partnership with Rovinheights Bookshop

The road ahead is still long, but our progress so far gives us hope and the momentum to keep pushing forward.

Thank you for walking this journey with us to our midline. Let’s continue to together until we reach our endline in September!

Weekend Highlights.

This Saturday, our students participated in the Read-A-Create event with Namse, a vibrant literacy, arts, and crafts event for children, organised by Dr. Namse Peter Udosen PhD, in partnership with Rovingheights Bookshop, Kaduna.

At Vision Books4All, we remain deeply committed to nurturing Literacy, creating Safe Spaces, and supporting the well-being of children.

From playful storytelling to drawing, crafting, and creative expression, children engaged in activities that brought joy and unlocked their imagination. These are some of the most powerful ways young minds learn to express themselves.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partner, Dr. Namse Peter Udosen PhD, for curating such a meaningful and inspiring experience for the children.

Last year, we conducted a Book Drive that raised 380 books and set up a vibrant library at Government Secondary School Rigasa Central. With shelves stocked and doors open to students!

To encourage a strong reading culture, we also launched a Library and Reading Club at Rigasa Central. Every Wednesday, students spend an hour reading, sharing what they’ve learned from books, and presenting essays and short stories they’ve written themselves.

We’re so proud of the work we do, and of the students who are discovering the power of reading, writing, stories, and ideas that can change the world.
It is our utmost pride to share the joy of reading and writing with students from our local communities.
