A Word of Caution on Foreign Health Deals in Nigeria...
Nigeria must approach foreign involvement with caution, especially reports of a $5 billion U.S.-backed health deal allegedly favouring hospitals linked to a particular religious group. In a country as religiously sensitive as Nigeria, any agreement perceived as one-sided risks deepening mistrust and triggering unnecessary tension.
History shows that foreign “aid” has often come with hidden interests, sometimes leading to instability and loss of sovereignty, as seen in several countries across the Middle East and Africa. Healthcare is a universal right and must never be seen as a tool for religious or political division.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should therefore be mindful of the consequences of signing agreements that lack transparency, fairness, and national balance. Nigeria’s unity, peace, and sovereignty must always come first, and all foreign partnerships must be inclusive, religion-neutral, and strictly in the national interest.
