Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiatives (GAPI) joins the world in celebrating International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Context, Common Aspiration.”

Young people live in different communities, face different realities, and come from diverse backgrounds, yet we share a common aspiration for peace, equality, opportunity, inclusion, and a better future.

At GAPI, we recognize young people as powerful agents of change. They are not only leaders of tomorrow but leaders of today ,peacebuilders, advocates, innovators, and changemakers today. Their voices and actions are essential in preventing violence, countering hate speech and misinformation, promoting social cohesion, and building peaceful communities.

This International Youth Day, we call for greater investment in youth education, skills development, employment, leadership, and meaningful participation in decision-making.

Our contexts may be different, but our aspirations can unite us.
Different Contexts. Common Aspiration. One shared commitment to peace and a sustainable future.

Celebrating Excellence in Service: Congratulations to Our Executive Director! 🏆🎉

The Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiative (GAPI) is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of our Executive Director, Maryam Mahmud Ibrahim, on receiving the Award of Excellence for Effective Collaboration in Security and Humanitarian Service, presented by Commodore Mahmud A. Fana, Outgoing Commander, Sector 1, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), Plateau State, Nigeria.

This prestigious recognition is a testament to years of dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to promoting peace, humanitarian service, women’s empowerment, and community development. It also reflects the power of collaboration and the impact that can be achieved when individuals and organizations work together for the common good.

As an organization, we recognize that this honour is not for one person alone,it belongs to the entire GAPI family. We celebrate our incredible volunteers, whose passion, resilience, and selfless service continue to drive our mission. We also appreciate our partners, community leaders, security agencies, supporters, and every individual who has believed in our vision and stood with us throughout this journey. Your encouragement and collaboration have made this achievement possible.

To our Executive Director, Maryam Mahmud Ibrahim, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. Your visionary leadership, resilience, humility, and unwavering passion for building peaceful and inclusive communities continue to inspire us all. Thank you for leading with courage, compassion, and purpose.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that the reward for hard work is more work. 🚨 Strengthening Awareness Against Human Trafficking and Recruitment by Violent Groups

On 20th May 2026, EMA4Kids Legacy Foundation, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiative (GAPI), successfully organized a one-day training on “Preventing Exploitation by Human Traffickers and Recruitment by Violent Groups” at the Plateau State Peace Building Agency Conference Hall.

The training brought together EMA4Kids scholarship beneficiaries, staff of Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiative (GAPI), and staff of the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PSPBA).

Session 1: Opening and Welcome Remarks

The event commenced with opening remarks from EMA4Kids Legacy Foundation, followed by goodwill messages and presentations from representatives of GAPI, NHRC, and PSPBA, highlighting their mandates and commitment to protecting vulnerable populations.

Session 2: Understanding Human Trafficking

Facilitated by NHRC Director, Barr. Kyenpia Mafuyai, participants explored:

✅ What human trafficking is
✅ Different forms of trafficking
✅ Causes and methods used by traffickers
✅ The dangers and consequences of trafficking
✅ The prevalence of trafficking in Plateau State

A key discussion point was how insecurity, displacement, and economic hardship increase the vulnerability of children and young people to trafficking and exploitation.

Session 3: Vulnerability and Risk Factors

Participants learned about the groups most vulnerable to trafficking, including:

🔹 Orphans and vulnerable youths
🔹 Needy families
🔹 Conflict-affected displaced persons
🔹 Individuals seeking better opportunities

Session 4: Recruitment by Violent Groups

The facilitator examined:

🔹 Recruitment tactics used by violent groups
🔹 Causes of recruitment, including unemployment, poverty, trauma, displacement, and insecurity
🔹 The dangers and long-term consequences of involvement in violent groups
🔹 Measures for prevention and community resilience

Session 5: Interactive Breakout Discussions

A breakout session was facilitated by GAPI Team Lead, Maryam Mahmud, alongside Mrs. Juliana Nyam of EMA4Kids Legacy Foundation.

Participants were divided into five groups to discuss the causes, challenges, and solutions to human trafficking within their communities.

During the group presentations, a common issue identified across all groups was:

📌 The impact of violent conflict and community displacement.

Participants noted that displacement weakens family and community protection systems, increases vulnerability, and exposes children and other vulnerable individuals to trafficking and exploitation.

Session 6: Community-Based Prevention Strategies

Participants identified practical strategies for preventing recruitment into violent groups, including:

✔ Youth empowerment and livelihood support
✔ Peacebuilding and conflict resolution initiatives
✔ Safe spaces and mentorship programs
✔ Community sensitization and awareness campaigns
✔ Strengthening trust between communities and security agencies

🛡️ Key Message

Human trafficking and recruitment by violent groups are realities that often occur within our communities. Protecting vulnerable persons requires vigilance, awareness, timely reporting, and collective action from families, communities, civil society organizations, and government institutions.

Together, we can create safer communities and protect those most at risk.

On the 5th-7th of may 2026 one of the staff of the Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiative (GAPI) participated in the Media for Peace Training organized by GIZ,Nigeria .

The 3-day training brought together young people from various LGAs, creating a platform for learning, interaction, and sharing ideas on the role of media in promoting peace, unity, and social cohesion. As a holistic and impactful training, several important topics were discussed,
-content creation for development and peace building.
-understanding Disinformation and hate narrative
-Digital media in peace building.

One of the key takeaways from the training was the understanding that media is a powerful tool that can either escalate conflict or promote peace depending on how it is used.

The training also emphasized the importance of using media platforms responsibly to amplify positive narratives, encourage dialogue, and strengthen community resilience and how to approach peace building from the aspect of social media: social media approach to peace building involves utilizing various social media as too to promote peace and also through social media, peace builders can disseminate the information about peace building activities and initiatives.

At GAPI, media plays an integral role in the work we do, especially in amplifying voices, promoting peacebuilding initiatives, advocating for vulnerable groups, and fostering meaningful conversations that inspire positive change within our communities.

Girls Advocacy for Peace Initiatives (GAPI) strongly condemns the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State which claimed the lives of innocent residents, including women .

This senseless violence is unacceptable, and no reason can justify the killing of vulnerable civilians. We call on the Plateau State government and security agencies to act swiftly by ensuring those responsible are arrested and brought to justice.

We stand in solidarity with the victims’ families and urge all residents to remain calm and law-abiding during this difficult time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, especially the family of the deceased, and we pray for peace to return to Jos,Plateau State.
