THE FINAL MARCH TO POLIO ERADICATION
Today, October 24, 2025, the E-Club of Eagles Nigeria joins Rotarians worldwide to celebrate World Polio Day, a vital date in the global health calendar. It serves as an annual reminder of the immense progress made in the fight against polio—a disease that has been reduced by over 99.9%—and a call to action for the final, critical push toward complete eradication.
This year, our club reinforced its dedication to this historic cause by engaging in a public awareness campaign, demonstrating to the community that the fight against polio is a fight for all of us.
Our Call to Action: KICKING POLIO OUT
The progress achieved globally is staggering. From 350,000 cases annually in 1988, the world is now closer than ever to eradicating only the second human disease in history, after smallpox.
However, the job is not yet finished. As long as the wild poliovirus persists in any corner of the world, every child remains at risk. Our message on World Polio Day is clear: Together, we can kick against polio, ensuring a polio-free future for every generation. This last mile requires sustained funding, vigilant surveillance, and unwavering community awareness.
To mark this significant day, members of the E-Club of Eagles Nigeria actively participated to make this a successful event. Our members, wearing branded Polio eradication campaign T-shirts, took to the streets of Jos, Plateau State, in a highly visible and energetic march past. This public demonstration served multiple critical purposes:
1. Public Awareness: It brought the issue out of the headlines and into the local community, reminding citizens that while local cases are rare, the global commitment must continue.
2. Solidarity: The march displayed our club's solidarity with the global health community and the millions of volunteers worldwide dedicated to immunization efforts.
3. Visual Impact: The collective action of our members created a powerful visual impact, drawing attention to our ongoing commitment and inspiring others to learn more about the final phase of eradication.
The World Polio Day march was a tremendous success, generating local attention and underlining the serious, yet hopeful, status of the eradication effort. It clearly communicated that global health is a shared responsibility.
We thank every member who marched and volunteered their time today. Let us continue to advocate for a Polio-free world until the final case is confirmed, and the world can declare victory over this debilitating disease.
