THE BRUISES TOLD A STORY NO CHILD SHOULD EVER HAVE TO TELL

A CWEENS Shelter- Kampkpe House Impact Story
What kind of domestic work should a 9-year-old child be doing?
The answer is simple: none that robs her of her childhood, safety, dignity, or right to be protected.

A Child Is Not a Domestic Worker

"She was only 9 years old."

A child. Not a house help.

A child. Not a punching bag.

A child. Not a source of labour.

When a 9-year-old girl arrived at CWEENS Shelter – Kampkpe House on May 26, 2026, she carried more than a small bag. She carried visible scars of abuse.

She had been subjected to domestic labour outside her family home and allegedly beaten repeatedly, leaving painful lesions on her head and marks across her body.

No child should endure such treatment.

Under the Plateau State Child's Rights Law (2005), children must not be subjected to exploitative labour, including domestic work outside the family environment that is harmful to their physical, mental, or emotional well-being. What happened to this child was not discipline. It was a violation of her rights.

Following intervention by the relevant authorities, including the Civil Defence Corps, she was removed from harm and brought to CWEENS Shelter – Kampkpe House, where she received care, protection, psychosocial support, and medical treatment for her injuries.

One week may seem like a short time.

But for a child living in fear, one week can mean the difference between continued abuse and safety.

On June 2, 2026, she was successfully reintegrated with her family in the South-East, beginning a new chapter away from the environment where she was harmed.

This case is also a sobering reminder that abuse can occur in places we least expect. Family ties, familiarity, or trust should never replace vigilance and accountability.

No one should assume that a child is safe simply because they are with a relative or someone known to the family.

Today, as she rebuilds her life, we wish her safety, healing, love, and the opportunity to simply be what she has always been a child.

CWEENS and partner advocacy groups continue to use this case to highlight the urgent need for increased vigilance, early reporting, and stronger child protection systems. Timely intervention saves lives.

If you suspect a child is being abused, neglected, or exploited, please speak up. Your report could be the lifeline that protects a child from further harm.

What happens when purpose-driven people come together to learn, grow, and lead?

These snapshots capture moments from our recent CWEENS Staff Capacity Training themed "Empowered to Multiply" — a transformative experience focused on biblical mentoring, Christ-centered leadership, and multiplying impact for lasting change.

Throughout the training, staff engaged in meaningful discussions on transformational leadership, mentorship, Kingdom values, and the importance of investing in others to create sustainable impact.

From powerful learning sessions to moments of reflection and connection, every interaction reinforced a simple but profound truth:

Leadership is not about building ourselves—it is about empowering others, raising new leaders, and multiplying impact that outlives us.

As we continue our work in communities across Nigeria, we remain committed to equipping our team with the knowledge, values, and skills needed to drive meaningful transformation.

Empowered to Multiply. Equipped to Lead. Committed to Impact.

DAY 3: DYNAMICS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL MENTORING

As part of the ongoing CWEENS Staff Capacity Strengthening Programme, today's session focused on The Dynamics of Transformational Mentoring an insightful and thought-provoking exploration of how intentional relationships can shape lives, develop leaders, and create sustainable impact.

The session challenged participants to see mentoring as more than a transfer of knowledge. Transformational mentoring is a deliberate, life-on-life process that nurtures character, strengthens competence, inspires vision, and cultivates purpose.

Key discussions centered on:

🔹 The different forms of mentoring formal, non-formal, and informal and the unique role each plays in personal and leadership development.

🔹 Cultural mentoring, with reflections on how values, identity, language, and life skills are often passed on naturally through families and communities, reminding us that some of the most powerful lessons are caught rather than taught.

🔹 The Head, Heart, and Hand framework, emphasizing that effective mentors influence not only what people know (Head), but also who they become (Heart) and what they are able to do (Hand).

🔹 The powerful mentoring principle: Think Big. Start Small. Go Deep.
Participants were encouraged to embrace a long-term vision, invest intentionally in people, and pursue depth rather than mere numbers in mentoring relationships.

🔹 The importance of commitment, purpose, accountability, and continuous evaluation in building mentoring relationships that produce lasting transformation.

One of the strongest takeaways from the session was the reminder that transformational mentoring is not about creating dependence or gathering followers. It is about raising capable, confident, and values-driven leaders who will, in turn, influence and transform others.

This Capacity Strengthening Programme is being implemented through the Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership Nigeria (RWVL-N) Project, supported by ActionAid Nigeria, funded by Global Affairs Canada.

DAY 3: THE SIX HOW-TO'S OF TRANSFORMATIONAL MENTORING

The third day of the CWEENS Staff Capacity Training, Empowered to Multiply focused on a critical question:

How do we intentionally build transformational mentoring relationships that produce lasting impact?

Participants explored practical principles for mentoring that goes beyond transferring knowledge to transforming lives.

A key lesson was the importance of trust.

Transformational mentoring begins with building genuine trust relationships. Mentoring requires vulnerability, openness, and a willingness to walk alongside another person in their life journey. Without trust, meaningful transformation becomes difficult.

The training emphasized that mentors must prayerfully discern those they are called to invest in, asking important questions:

• Do they desire spiritual growth?
• What are their current growth needs?
• Are they teachable?
• How can I contribute to their journey?
• How might they contribute to mine?

Participants also examined the practical foundations of healthy mentoring relationships:

✅ Agreeing on goals and expectations
✅ Defining the roles of mentor and mentee
✅ Establishing meeting schedules and venues
✅ Creating safe spaces for honest conversations
✅ Anticipating and addressing potential pitfalls
✅ Maintaining transparency, accountability, and appropriate boundaries

One powerful reminder from the session was that transformational mentoring is not primarily about delivering content or completing a curriculum.

It is a calling to servanthood.

Just as Jesus prayed before calling His disciples, effective mentors must begin with prayer, seeking God's wisdom, direction, and discernment.

The session challenged participants to embrace a servant mindset
one that seeks not to control, clone, or impress others, but to walk with them toward Christ-like growth and transformation.

At CWEENS, we believe multiplication happens when leaders intentionally invest in people, build trust, and create spaces where transformation can flourish.

Mentoring is not merely a program. It is a ministry of presence, service, and transformation.

CWEENS STAFF CAPACITY TRAINING – DAY 3
Theme: Empowered to Multiply

Day 3 focused on the practical application of Transformational Mentoring—taking the initiative to walk alongside others and becoming an instrument in God's hands to help them become all He has called them to be.

Participants explored the cost of mentoring, recognizing that meaningful transformation requires intentional investment of time, commitment, prayer, consistency, and genuine relationships.

Key lessons included:

✔️ Creating time for people
✔️ Building trust-based relationships
✔️ Identifying and investing in potential mentees
✔️ Understanding personal strengths and weaknesses
✔️ Prayerfully discerning whom God is calling us to mentor

A major takeaway was that trust and vulnerability are essential for transformational growth. Mentoring is more than sharing knowledge—it is walking with people through life's journey and helping them grow into their God-given purpose.

As we continue this journey, we are reminded that transformed lives multiply impact.

We are empowered to multiply. We are called to transform lives.

CWEENS STAFF CAPACITY TRAINING – DAY 3

Theme: Empowered to Multiply

Day 3 began with a recap of key lessons from previous sessions before participants delved into the practical dimensions of Transformational Mentoring.

The day opened with Prayer and a powerful reminder that storytelling is a tool God can use to help people become all that He wants them to be and do all that He has called them to do.

Participants revisited the definition of Transformational Mentoring:

“Taking the initiative to join someone's life journey and becoming an instrument in the hands of God to help them become all that God wants them to be and do all that God wants them to do.”

A key lesson from the session was the importance of counting the cost of mentoring. Effective mentoring requires intentional investment of time, energy, emotional capacity, commitment, and consistency. Transformation does not happen overnight; it often requires walking alongside people through different seasons of life.

The training also explored practical steps for becoming a transformational mentor:

✔️ Adjusting priorities to create time for people
✔️ Praying and making oneself available to God
✔️ Identifying personal strengths and weaknesses
✔️ Identifying potential mentees
✔️ Building trust-based relationships
✔️ Prayerfully discerning whom God is calling us to invest in

A major emphasis was placed on trust and vulnerability. Participants learned that meaningful mentoring relationships thrive where trust exists, allowing people to grow, learn, share openly, and experience genuine transformation.

The session concluded with reflective questions designed to help participants assess their readiness to mentor others and identify opportunities to intentionally invest in lives for Kingdom impact.

As we continue this journey, we are reminded that transformational mentoring is not merely about sharing knowledge—it is about walking with people, nurturing growth, and multiplying leaders who will, in turn, impact others.
