In Argentina, Afro-Latinos are fighting for their presence to not be erased and make efforts to keep their stories alive. In 1778, Afro-Argentines made up a large share of the population, including 44% of Córdoba’s inhabitants. The country’s traditions and culture would not be what they are today without the influence of African customs. Black people in the country faced decimation through systemic racism like being forced to fight on the front lines during the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay, a yellow fever epidemic that rich, white Argentines largely escaped, and forced pregnancies that led to in*******al children who were then stripped of their African culture. European immigrants mainly from Italy added to the erasure of the country’s Afro-Latino population.
As of the 2022 census, 302,936 people identified as having African descent. Yet, many Afro-Argentines face invisibility and discrimination being mistaken for foreign tourists rather than recognized as citizens. Today, we show you the vast influence that Afro-Argentines bring not only to Argentina, but Latin-America as a whole. In the U.S., Afro-Latinos face the same struggles of erasure and oppression. As continues, we uplift the voices of Black Latinos and the importance of sharing their stories across the nation.
