This short clip we posted (in our previous post) describes what we see in the field almost each time we go out to give a talk. We have kids who come to meet us about being s*xually molested by a relative. Someone very close to them. Their academic performance drops and they become withdrawn from people. When they open up to us and tell us what is going on, it’s very heart breaking and they usually want to keep the abuser “safe” by not exposing them. We are in partnership with the Human Rights Commission so we sometimes carry these cases to them. We have been to communities where they fathers say “they must chop (eat; have s*x with their daughters first) before anyone else and this practice is still on today. We need to keep sensitize our communities and most especially these kids on what is right. Which is why we advocate for proper s*x education and also speaking with them on what abuse is.
How many parents talk to their kids on s*x?
Now to the part of the teacher. A teacher must create a safe space (like the woman in the video) for the child. If the atmosphere is safe that child will be able to speak out. Also from some schools we have heard of and been to, some teachers tell their kids NOT to speak out because it will bring shame to their family and to the child. But is it not better to speak up? Once the child fails to speak out, abuse becomes continuous. Last year we had an on-site training for teachers on creating safe spaces in the classroom environment and this year we will repeat part of this topic again to re-emphasize the need for teachers to understand the need to have these safe spaces in the classroom environment. Our teachers need to be equipped to handle these cases when they come. Sometimes, the teachers tells the kids not to speak out just to they can also abuse them too. We have seen first hand cases where people have faced these things.
We need your help and support to create a safe and better classroom environment for our kids.
Lastly, teach your kids to SPEAK OUT! This is what we stand for as well. Kids need to learn to speak out. Most times, fear keeps them from speaking out but when parents become intentional about teaching their kids this and not responding from a place of judgement, they will find out a whole lot about their kids.

We hope to work with the Plateau state Government to achieve our goal. We can’t wait to cover more grounds this year as we teach. God bless you.
Thank you!
