Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote address on the recently held YARN South West stakeholders meeting on industrial farming; it's implications for the Nigeria State in Abeokuta, Ogun State in light of the signed MoU between Nigeria and JBS.

My presentation asked a simple but critical question: Is industrial farming really the way forward for Nigeria? Using JBS as a case study, I highlighted the risks their planned investment could pose to our people's health, culture, food system and environment.

While some welcomed the deal, many overlooked the hidden costs. In other countries, JBS has been linked to land grabs, community displacement, deforestation, water contamination, cultural erosion, green washing, and most importantly the loss of food sovereignty.

We therefore called on the Nigerian government to:

Explain why an MoU was signed on behalf of over 240 million Nigerians without their input.

Make the MoU public for citizens to scrutinize and participate

Develop a checklist with relevant stakeholders to hold JBS accountable during their operation process.

This is not about being “anti-investment.” It is about accountability, transparency, protecting our food sovereignty and the livelihoods of our local farmers

Any development must put the well-being of our people and nation first.

Climate justice relies heavily on food sovereignty, which must be built from local communities. Grasping food sovereignty's role in climate justice means acknowledging agribusiness's impact on the climate crisis.

From Fossil Fuels to Biogas: Empowering Niger Delta Communities for a Climate-Smart Future
Driving grassroots action through sustainable energy education and climate adaptation

Youth for Environmental Sustainability and Development (YESD), proudly launched a transformative climate and energy education campaign in Ibeno, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with active participation from exchange delegates from Bayelsa State. Spanning over forty (40) active participants alongside other stakeholders drawn from different parts of the identified communities.

Dr. Peter Chukwudi who was the lead guest speaker at the workshop spoke extensively and emphatically on the theme "From Fossil Fuels to Biogas: Empowering Niger Delta Communities for a Climate-Smart Future", while leading the participants (delegates) through a step-by-step processes and procedures on how to build an eco-friendly Biogas plants using easily accessible waste materials that could be sourced in and around the immediate communities, and equally on an affordable budget.
He further explained the importance of transitioning from the traditional use of fossil fuels as forms of energy generation to cleaner forms like bio-generated ones that could result in multiple uses like the production of biogases, bio-fertilizers, bio-electricity and many more. In his remarks, Dr. Peter Chukwudi further pushed for an active approach and collaboration of the participating communities through her leaderships and the oil producing companies alongside other stakeholders in order to produce and install at least one central biogas plant in all the local government areas or communities using the knowledge, skills, and expertise acquired by the participants.

This initiative underscores the urgent need to transition from dependence on fossil fuels to cleaner, community-based biogas alternatives. The program brings together youth leaders, educators, community stakeholders, and technical experts to raise awareness and build capacity for sustainable energy development across oil-impacted regions.

The benefiting communities through the voice of one of their leaders - Chief John Bassey, expressed unreserved gratitude to YESD and her partners for the unique initiative; and also promised active engagement with all necessary stakeholders for eventual implementation of the program's objectives generating new, cleaner, eco-friendly, and sustainable forms of energies.

Through workshops, biogas technology demonstrations, tree planting, and community engagement activities, YESD is building a new generation of eco-leaders committed to climate justice, energy transition, and grassroots innovation.
“The Niger Delta holds both the scars and the solutions,” said Adesuwa James Jang, Team Lead of YESD. “We are empowering our people with knowledge and tools to heal the land and drive a climate-smart future.”

This project amplifies youth voices and strengthens regional collaboration as exchange participants from Bayelsa State share local experiences, success stories, and learnings to build a united front for sustainability in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
Many thanks to our support partner Global Greengrants Fund for making this a reality.

*GMO-Free Nigeria Alliance Stages Rally Against Genetically Modified Organisms*

Yesterday, the GMO-Free Nigeria Alliance did a rally to educate the public about the potential impacts of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria. The rally, was held at the secretariat underbridge on December 13, 2024, it was a direct response to the Nigerian authorities' consideration of GMOs as a "silver bullet" solution to the country's agricultural challenges.

While acknowledging the government's intention to improve food security, the coalition remains unconvinced that GMOs are the way forward, citing unresolved controversies surrounding their global use, including potentially harmful effects on human health.

The nationwide campaign against GMOs was led by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), with support from a coalition of over 1,000 individuals and groups, including farmers, civil society organizations, scientists, nutritionists, legal practitioners, and youth movements.

Youth for Environmental Sustainability and Development was invited to host the Jos rally with community members Mrs Adesuwa James Jang, who is the founder and Team Lead, and Plateau State Think Tank coordinated over 150 community members from Vom, Zawan, Anguldin, Shen, Kuffang Villages, University of Jos, student, Department of Forestry and Geography, Tundu Wada Community and Famers and consumers alike.

The rally aimed to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with GMOs and to promote agroecological farming practices that prioritize public health, biodiversity, and food sovereignty in Nigeria and call for a ban to GMO in Plateau State and Nigeria at large.
