📚 BRIDGE BOOKS INITIATIVE — DAMATURU

On Friday, 9th October 2026, SAVWIN visited Njiwaji Special Education Centre, Damaturu, Yobe State to promote literacy for children with special educational needs!

We donated 91 books — including English Lit, Maths, Science booklets, Reading Mastery & flashcards — to support inclusive learning.

Our team member Mr. Irmiya Mbaya was warmly received by Head Teacher Mr. Abdullahi Ibrahim & Centre Leader Mr. Simon Iliya Bulama. The best part? Seeing learners open the books immediately and start learning in class! 💙

At SAVWIN, we believe every child deserves the right to read, learn and lead — regardless of ability.

This is what inclusion looks like. 📖♿

We will be back for a follow-up visit to ensure the books keep making impact!

SAVWIN LAUNCHES BORNO STATE PLATFORM ON DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE CLIMATE GOVERNANCE

On 15th June 2026, Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria (SAVWIN), with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), successfully launched the Borno State Platform on Disability-Inclusive Climate Governance in Maiduguri.
Held under the theme “From Margin to Mainstream: Disability-Inclusive Governance in Borno State,” the event brought together government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and other stakeholders.

The platform was established to create a stronger and more coordinated space for women with disabilities to participate meaningfully in climate governance, policy development, decision-making, and climate resilience initiatives.
During the event, participants discussed the barriers faced by women with disabilities, including limited participation in decision-making, inaccessible information, physical and digital barriers, stigma, economic constraints, and gaps in disability-disaggregated data.

A major highlight was the official unveiling of the Borno State Platform, accompanied by commitments from stakeholders including the Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment, SEMA, Ministry of Agriculture, and OPDs to collaborate in advancing disability-inclusive climate action.

The platform will support:
✅ Policy advocacy and policy input
✅ Coordination and information sharing
✅ Capacity building and awareness
✅ Monitoring and accountability
✅ Resource mobilization and partnerships

This milestone reinforces SAVWIN’s commitment to ensuring that women and girls with disabilities are not left behind in climate action and governance.
As emphasized during the launch:
“Nothing about us, without us.” 🌱♿

Together, we are working towards a Borno State where climate policies, budgets, early-warning systems, livelihoods, and resilience initiatives are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the realities of women with disabilities.

🕊️ INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2026 - In Reflection🕊️

Theme: Invest in Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day

Yesterday, 21st September, the world marked the International Day of Peace.

At SAVWIN - Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria - we joined our voices to say: there is no true peace without inclusion.

For women and girls with disabilities, peace is more than the absence of war. It is:

Safety in our communities.
Dignity and respect every day.
Accessibility during emergencies.
And a seat at the table where decisions about peace are made.

Women with disabilities are often hit hardest by conflict and climate change, yet we are left out of peacebuilding. At SAVWIN, we see every day that women with disabilities are not victims - we are builders of peace.

As we reflect on this year's theme, "Invest in Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day," we renew our call: Invest in a peace that includes ALL women.

From all of us at SAVWIN, happy belated International Day of Peace! 💜♿️🕊️

SAVWIN Launches Grassroots Climate Action Group for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Biu LGA, Borno State.

Biu, Borno State – The Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative (SAVWIN) has successfully organized a groundbreaking program in Biu Local Government Area, aimed at equipping women and girls with disabilities with advocacy skills and formally establishing a Grassroots Climate Action Group named "Inclusive Climate Change Advocates"

The event held on Monday 11th August 2025 gathered 29 participants from across the LGA.

In a welcome address delivered by Mr. Samuel Bassi on behalf of the Executive Director, Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advancing the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities.

Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, Executive Director of SAVWIN, she explained: “The aim of this program is to build on the knowledge gained during the capacity-building workshop we held in the month of May and to create a united platform where women with disabilities can speak with one voice in their communities. Advocacy is about speaking up, raising awareness, and influencing change, and today we are ensuring that women and girls with disabilities are equipped to do just that.

Participants benefited from an in-depth training session on advocacy and leadership, covering types of advocacy—self-advocacy, individual advocacy, and systems advocacy. Mshelia added: “When women and girls with disabilities are empowered to advocate, they are not only speaking for themselves but also for others who may not have the opportunity. This is how we create lasting change.”

The program concluded with the formation of the Biu Women with Disabilities Network under the name "Inclusive Climate Change Advocates" inaugurated with selected executives. The network is committed to driving grassroots advocacy on climate change, promoting disability rights, and improving the welfare of women, children, and the aged in the community.

Expressing appreciation, Mshelia said: “We are deeply grateful to the participants, facilitators, and local stakeholders who made this program possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive society where no voice is left behind.”

A TWO DAY CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING AT BIU, BORNO STATE.
DATE: 9TH – 10TH MAY 2025.

A two days training was conducted at Umfahad Hotel and Suite, opposite General Hospital, Gombi Road Biu, in Borno State. The training was on “Climate Justice and Inclusion for Women and Girls with Disabilities”.
It is noteworthy that climate change is one of the global challenges of our time with great consequences on human rights, economic development and environmental sustainability. Women and girls with disabilities are affected most by the change related to disaster and environmental degradation. Most of the times, groups of people with disabilities are excluded in decision making processes on climate response initiatives.

SAVWIN recognizes the need to hold a two-days capacity building workshop for thirty (30) women and girls with disabilities on climate change response, program and policies. The participants were equipped with relevant and necessary knowledge, skills and advocacy tools to promote their rights and interests.
Day 1. The facilitator, Mrs Lydia Bala talked on introduced climate justice as a human-centred approach that recognizes climate change which affects marginalized communities. Emphasizing equity, human rights and meaningful participation in climate action.

Other topics treated include:
* Why women with disabilities in climate justice?
* Key inclusion strategies
* Disability inclusive climate adaptation
* intersectionality and climate change
* Climate resilient livelihoods for women with disabilities
* Why inclusive decision making
* Barriers to inclusive decision making and all the calls to action.

Day 2. The facilitator, Mr. Irmiya Mbaya looked at climate justice and disability inclusion. He explained what climate justice as a movement and concept recognizing that climate change harm vulnerable and side-lined populations. This seeks to advocate for equitable ways to solve the historical issues.

Other topics of discussion were:
* Disability and climate inclusion
* Disability specific challenges
* Capacity for inclusive climate action
* Strategies that will help in addressing climate justice. Such as:

1. Inclusive Program Design
2. Inclusive Communication and Outreach
3. Organizational Capacity Strategies
4. Individual Capacity Strategies
5. Monitoring and Evaluation

The Executive Director of SAVWIN had a breakout session with the participants, during which the discussion hinged on - working together as one. The desire to be one can only be achieved when there is shared vision, mission, objectives, acceptance, respect beyond ethnicity, affiliations and disability. She further said many timesnwe find faults and point accusing fingers on others forgetting we may have more problems than the people we accuse or keep off from. To drive this idea home, the Executive Director gave an illustration. She called out ten (10) of the participants and sticked a written inscription on the back of each participant and asked them to go round and stand at the back of anyone they like the inscription on her back or hug the person.

The inscriptions are Hatred, Gossip, Love, Greed, Malice, Kindness, etc. with only 2 having good attitude ( caring woman, a generous woman). Many of the participants rush to the people that have good inscriptions but none went to the persons with negative inscriptions while doing that they forgot they have an ugly written inscription on their back too. The lesson here shows that most pple we perceived as unfit might as well be better then us, while we are busy blaming and cutting off people simply because we don't like their attitudes,nwe forget we also have ours which manage are managing. He emphasized on the need to join hands and work together in unity and harmony.
Evaluation: The SAVWIN Coordinator in Biu Mr. Samuel Musa Bassi asked the participants to evaluate the two-days training in the following: Facilitators/facilitation, presentations, and the meals served.

Facilitators: The participants ranked the facilitators at 98% each. They enjoyed the presentations as they were allowed to contribute and asked questions.
Closing Remarks
One of the participant who spoke on behalf of others, appreciated SAVWIN for such an impactful and wonderful training workshop as first if it's kinda done in the LGA which changed their thoughts about climate change and climate justice. They promised to put that which they learnt into practice in their various endeavors.
