Custodians of African Literature - COAL COAL accelerates access to quality education at the grassroots and support youth-led social change in the creative arts.

The Custodians of African Literature (COAL) is a nonprofit that empowers children ages 5-14 and youth ages 15-29 through alternative education and literary development. We believe that being able to just read and write is the first step in preparing a young person for success, and books have the propensity to make children and youth better thinkers, writers, and leaders. Our motivation stems from

our commitment over the past 5 years to literary development, and the goal of seeing a reduction in the number of out of school children in Nigeria. COAL believes bridging the education inequity gap is possible through books. Our programmes amplify youth voice and create platforms for literary and creative expression across communities.

The COAL Open Mic stage is yours.

We are calling for performers for the COAL Open Mic on June 21st, and we want to hear what you've got.

If you're a poet, spoken word artist, musician, singer, or any kind of creative performer, this stage was built for you. We want to hear your voice, your music, and your art.

Here's what you need to know:
🎤 Performers: slots are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Register now to secure your spot before it's taken. You must arrive at the venue by 1:40PM (20 minutes before the 2PM start) this is non-negotiable so we can get everyone sorted before the mic opens.

👥 Attendees; not performing? You're still very much welcome and we'd love to know you're coming. Please sign up as well so we can plan the room properly.

Our Host Shammah sat with Brenda Asiimwe Ugandan writer and creative and what followed was one of those rare, unhurried conversations that moves through everything: where she comes from, what drives her, the experiences that have shaped her, the work she has chosen to give her life to, her projects and the deeply personal reasons behind it all.

We talked about her journey. Her motivation. The moments that pushed her to keep going. The stories she felt needed to exist and why she felt called to tell them. And yes we got personal.
