Young people are often described as the leaders of tomorrow. At AfRICOSUD, we believe they should lead from today.

Through active youth engagement, we work with young people to prevent violence, identify early warning signs, promote dialogue, challenge misinformation, and build peaceful and resilient communities.

When young people have the knowledge, skills, platforms and opportunities to participate meaningfully, they become powerful agents of conflict prevention and community transformation.

AfRICOSUD was represented at the launch of the Taraba State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, an important step toward building a more climate-resilient and sustainable Taraba State.

The plan aligns strongly with AfRICOSUD’s commitment to community resilience, youth empowerment, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. Climate change is not only an environmental challenge—it can deepen competition over land and resources, increase livelihood vulnerabilities, and contribute to conflict, particularly in already fragile communities.

Through our work with young people and communities, AfRICOSUD continues to promote locally driven solutions that strengthen resilience, advance peaceful coexistence, and empower communities to respond to emerging challenges.

Young people do not all grow up in the same environment.

For some, the reality is conflict and insecurity. For others, it is unemployment, climate change, limited opportunities, inequality, weak access to education, misinformation or exclusion from decision-making.

Our contexts may be different, and the challenges peculiar to our communities may vary, but our aspirations are common.

We all want to live in peaceful communities.
We want opportunities to learn, work and thrive.
We want our voices to matter.
We want responsive and accountable governance.
We want to participate in shaping decisions that affect our lives.
We want a future where young people are not only heard, but trusted to lead.

This International Youth Day, AfRICOSUD recognizes the resilience and agency of young people across different communities.

Because addressing youth issues requires understanding the context in which young people live—and creating spaces for them to become part of the solutions.

Let us build communities where every young person, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to contribute, lead and thrive.

What if the best solutions to our community's challenges are already in the minds of young people and we simply needed to give them the opportunity to lead?

At GDSS Nyamusala, Taraba state, the Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI) placed student prefects in the driver's seat of learning through a hands-on Problem Analysis session.

Working in groups, the students identified real challenges affecting their school and community, analysed their root causes, developed practical solutions, and confidently presented their ideas. Rather than being passive learners, they became active problem-solvers.

In the process, they strengthened critical leadership skills, including critical thinking, teamwork, communication, public speaking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and decision-making. They also learned how to listen to different perspectives, build consensus, and transform ideas into practical actions.

This is the kind of leadership we want to see—young people who do not simply point out problems but have the confidence, skills, and agency to develop solutions. By nurturing a solution-driven mindset, we are preparing the next generation of leaders to create positive change in their schools, communities, and beyond.

Another inspiring session of the Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI) brought together student prefects from one of our partner secondary schools, GDSS Magami, Jalingo for an engaging leadership experience.

The sessions challenged participants to understand that true leadership is not about titles or authority, but about serving others with integrity, humility, and purpose.

The energy in the room was inspiring. Participants asked thoughtful questions, shared personal experiences, and reflected on the kind of leaders they aspire to become. Their enthusiasm reminded us that when young people are trusted, challenged, and equipped, they are capable of driving meaningful change in their schools and communities.

We see every classroom as a starting point for nation-building. By nurturing leadership values in young people today, we are helping shape a generation that will make ethical decisions, promote peaceful coexistence, and lead with compassion wherever they find themselves.

Every conversation, every lesson, and every young leader we engage brings us one step closer to the future we want to see.

We successfully held the first training under the Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI), AfRICOSUD's flagship school-based leadership programme.

We had the privilege of engaging an inspiring group of secondary school prefects in an interactive session focused on building the values and skills of ethical, servant, and transformational leadership. Through discussions, practical exercises, and shared experiences, participants explored what it truly means to lead with integrity, communicate effectively, work as a team, and become ambassadors of peace within their schools.

At AfRICOSUD, we believe that lasting development starts from the grassroots. Our bottom-to-top approach recognizes that tomorrow's leaders are sitting in today's classrooms. By investing in young leaders early, we are planting the seeds for stronger schools, more resilient communities, and a more peaceful Nigeria.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to reaching more schools across Taraba State and empowering hundreds of student leaders to become catalysts for positive change.

🚀 Introducing the Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI)!

At AfRICOSUD, we believe that the future of Nigeria begins in today's classrooms.

Leadership is not something that starts in government offices or boardrooms—it begins with the choices young people make every day. That is why we are proud to launch the Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI), a school-based leadership development programme designed to equip secondary school prefects across Taraba State with the skills, values, and confidence to lead with integrity and purpose.

Over the coming months, our team will visit selected secondary schools to deliver interactive leadership training modeled on the positive youth development framework which views young people as assets to be nurtured rather than problems to be fixed.

We are committed to raising a generation of young leaders who will inspire positive change in their schools, strengthen their communities, and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

We believe that leadership is not about power but service, integrity, and the courage to make a difference even in fragile communities.

Together, we are nurturing today's student leaders into tomorrow's community builders.

Strengthening Peace Through Education

As part of the outcomes of the Educators for Peace Project, we developed and published a Teachers' Manual designed to support educators in conflict-affected communities across Taraba, Benue, and Adamawa States.

The manual serves as a practical resource for integrating peacebuilding principles, conflict-sensitive teaching approaches, and social cohesion values into everyday classroom experiences, helping teachers nurture a culture of peace among young learners.

We are pleased to have presented copies of the manual to the Chairman of the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management, reinforcing our shared commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and preventing violence through education.

We believe that teachers are not only educators but also peacebuilders shaping the next generation.
