*APPLICATION PORTAL FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS IS OPEN!!!*

The APU Education Board is pleased to announce the opening of the Applications Portal For the Arondizuogu Scholarships Awards (2025 - 2028).

All the generous pioneer donors who funded the 2021 - 2024 Awards have renewed their awards for another 3-year tenure and the Board has been able to attract new donors for additional awards which has brought the total awards to approximately 100! This is almost a doubling of the awards when the Scheme was launched by APU in 2021/2022 academic session.

The award is for students who have secured admission to study or are already studying at various public higher institutions in Nigeria. Slots are available for all courses of study.

However, there are 30 awards for scholarships to students interested in Geology, Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Related courses at the Federal University of Lokoja that was not taken up last year. We urge parents/guardians to encourage their children/wards to consider applying to those courses in the 2024/2025 academic session as the scholarships also come with opportunities for internship and a path to employement upon graduation. APU has established very good relationship with the Vice Chancellor of the University, through Zuma Foundation.

🐌 SNAILS & COCKROACHES

In Nigeria, a meal with snails is a special delicacy. They are expensive. To be able to afford snails to eat is almost like a luxury.

But in Malawi, no one eats snails even though they are everywhere. Malawians abhor snails to the point that if you trick them into eating snails, they might vomit upon realization.

The day I mentioned to my parishioners in the church that I eat snails, they looked at me with shock. It was as though I have done the most disgusting thing ever.

I understood that feeling because that was exactly how I felt the day I got talking with a Chinese guy only for him to tell me that he eats cockroaches and that in their place, cockroaches are medicinal and highly rich in protein. I just couldn't process it in my head.

Some places consider it taboo to eat pork. Where I come from, nobody can even dare to rear pigs. When I got admission to the seminary, I was scandalized the day I saw some seminarians and priests eating pork. I couldn't believe my eyes. But surprisingly, the first day I summoned the courage to eat it, my life never remained the same. I hated that it took me so long to realize what I was missing.

People eat dogs, others don't. Some eat snakes, others won't dare. There are places where it is taboo to eat beef. We can go on and on.

In all these, why do you think it is disgusting for a particular group to even touch a snail while it is a special delicacy for another group?

I have asked many Malawians that question, but they have not even given it a thought before. And seeing that they have no rational answer, they simply said it is their culture or that snails are too slow and irritating.

If you check yourself, there are so many things you do and believe that have no basis except that you grew up seeing people believing and doing the same.

I can understand your resistance when I challenge some of the things that you grew up believing to be sacrosanct. First, I am a priest and you don't expect to hear such from a priest. Secondly, you have never been exposed to other realities; you think the world revolves around your village.

When your grandfathers could not explain the possibility of a woman giving birth to twins, they called it evil and started killing twins.

When your grandfathers could not understand XY Chromosomes, they called the woman evil for not giving her husband a male child and they ask the man to take another woman.

When your grandfathers could not understand why a man will die while having s*x with his wife and since they have no knowledge of High Blood Pressure or Cardiac arrest, they immediately conclude that it is the woman that killed him. So, to this, they will bathe the co**se that died five market days ago and give the water to the woman to drink to prove her innocence.

When your grandfathers could not understand genotype and sickle cell and why a child after birth could die, they called it ogbanje.

When your grandfathers could not understand why someone is without a job or has not gotten married or can't give birth, or people dying in the family, they called it generational curses.

Try to be better than your grandfathers. Try!

I know that in the same way it is difficult to convince Malawians to start eating snails or to convince Nigerians to start frying their cockroaches and eat, that is how it will be difficult to correct some of the things most of you grew up believing to be sacrosanct.

But we keep trying. Umumazi, this is the major reason we are online, to help one another get a better understanding and to free those who are caged with the mindset that the world revolves around their village....

There's a popular saying that goes, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." This saying implies that no matter how much we plan and prepare, there are always factors beyond our control that can derail our plans. While this may be true to some extent, it's important to note that planning is still crucial in achieving our goals and aspirations.

Here are some reasons why we need to plan rather than solely rely on God's plan:

Planning is an act of responsibility: Planning involves taking ownership and responsibility for our lives and the direction we want them to take. It's about being proactive instead of reactive. By planning, we can take charge of our lives and steer them in the direction we want, rather than simply waiting for things to happen.

Planning helps us set realistic goals: When we plan, we can set realistic goals that are achievable and measurable. This enables us to have a clear understanding of what we need to do to achieve our goals and track our progress along the way.

Planning helps us identify potential obstacles: When we plan, we can identify potential obstacles that may hinder us from achieving our goals. This enables us to come up with contingency plans to overcome these obstacles and keep moving forward.

Planning helps us make informed decisions: When we plan, we take into account all the relevant information and factors that may impact our goals. This enables us to make informed decisions and take the necessary actions to achieve our goals.

Planning gives us a sense of direction: When we plan, we have a clear sense of direction and purpose. This helps us stay focused and motivated, even when things don't go as planned.

While it's important to have faith in God's plan, it's equally important to take responsibility for our lives and plan accordingly. By planning, we can set ourselves up for success and achieve our goals, while also trusting that God will guide us along the way.

Diaspora Mmawu Festival, Ndi Igbo in the USA reliving Igbo culture in a foreign land. Many of these men and women are at the pinnacle of their professions but choose to stay back in the country that offered them opportunity to fulfill their dreams. What bad leadership and corruption have caused the Nigerian state is now an added value to the United States. In God I Trust that change will come sooner than later.

Arondizuogu Community.
