Dear Parents,
As we begin this new term, I kindly ask you to share an important message with your children: "Reflection after learning and reading is key to their success."
Reflection means taking time to think deeply about what they have learned or read, helping them to solidify their understanding and retain knowledge better. Here are three specific ways your children can practice reflection as students:
1. Reflect After Each Lesson
After a teacher finishes teaching, encourage your child to ask themselves: "What did I learn from Mr. Faleti's lesson?" Let them mentally revisit the entire lesson, from beginning to end. This habit will help them organize their thoughts and reinforce what was taught during class.
2. Reflect Before Bed
Before going to sleep each day, have them ask: "What did I learn in school today?" Encourage them to mentally walk through their entire school day, from the moment they entered the school to the time they left. By reflecting on the day's activities, they will strengthen their memory and understanding of what was covered.
3. Reflect After Reading
After finishing a reading session, they should close their book and ask: "What did I just read?" Let them mentally review the content they’ve read. If they find that they can't recall certain parts or concepts, it's a signal that they need to go over the material again to ensure full comprehension.
Reflection helps the brain process and store new information more effectively. As John Dewey an America philosopher and education reformer wisely said, "Reflection is the lifeblood of learning." The more they reflect, the more confident and capable they will become in their studies.
Thank you for encouraging your children to make reflection a daily habit. Together, we can support their journey to success!
