Bridging the Digital Divide: Empowering Young Women Through WiDES

In Nigeria, only 26% of women have access to the internet compared to 47% of men.

ImpactHER survey across Africa revealed that 60% of women have never received any form of digital skills training, leaving them unable to leverage technology for learning or income generation.

In rural and low-income communities, this gap widens dramatically. Behind these numbers are millions of young women who remain excluded from the digital world not because they lack curiosity or ambition, but because access, opportunity, and safety are still privileges, not rights.

Through interactive workshops, storytelling circles, and mentorship sessions, beneficiaries will learn practical digital skills while building confidence to explore online opportunities responsibly.

Beyond training, WiDES fosters community, a safe, supportive network where young women can share experiences, collaborate on projects, and advocate for others.

Today, we celebrate the power of the Internet, a tool that connects communities, drives innovation, and opens doors to learning and opportunity.

At PSACC, we recognize the Internet as more than technology. It is a bridge that empowers youth, women, and educators to participate in the digital economy and shape a more inclusive future.

This World Internet Day, we reaffirm our commitment to digital access, literacy, and safe online participation for all.

📚 Today is World Literacy Day a reminder that literacy is more than reading and writing. It is the foundation for lifelong learning, empowerment, and participation in society.

We see literacy as a bridge: connecting young people to opportunity, linking women to digital safety and economic independence, and opening doors for communities to thrive in the 21st century.

Every child, every woman, every learner deserves that bridge. Let’s continue to invest in education, technology, and inclusive learning spaces that make literacy a reality for all.

Nigeria’s new education reform is an important step toward aligning classrooms with the demands of the 21st century.

We welcome the addition of vocational and digital subjects that can prepare young people not just for exams, but for real opportunities in the workplace and the digital economy.

But reform on paper must be matched with investment, training, and equity. Without stronger support for teachers, infrastructure, and rural schools, the promise of this change may not reach every learner.

We are committed to doing our part by piloting digital learning modules, training facilitators, and building partnerships that ensure no community is left behind.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to equip Nigeria’s youth with practical skills, confidence, and the tools to thrive.

Let’s make it count.

Hassan Shuaib brought his A-game when he introduced our trainers to Technology Integration.

From the very beginning, he didn’t just talk about tech, he demonstrated how simple digital tools can transform the way we teach, collaborate, and engage with students. What stood out most was how he made technology feel less intimidating and more like a partner in creativity.

That shift in mindset is exactly why the session mattered. Thanks to Hassan, our trainers became prepared to integrate technology in ways that made learning more dynamic, interactive, and relevant for young people.

During our trainer capacity-building sessions for PLED+, we had the privilege of learning from Matthias Idjakpa, who made Financial Literacy and Business Management come alive.

In such a practical way, he broke down concepts like budgeting, pricing, and record-keeping. These are things many thought were too “technical” he and showed the trainers how to teach them simply to the students.

Thank you, Matthias for equipping our trainers with tools that will help young people turn ideas into sustainable ventures.

As part of the just-concluded PLED+ programme, our trainers had the privilege of learning from Agnes Onyekwere-Disu (Social Impact Mama), who brilliantly guided us through the world of Social Entrepreneurship.

For the trainers, it was their first time understanding how business principles can be used to solve pressing social challenges. The facilitator broke down complex ideas with relatable scenarios and encouraged us to think critically about the kind of change we want to drive in our communities.

One moment that stood out was when a trainer shared: “I used to see entrepreneurship only as a way to make money, but now I understand that social entrepreneurship is about creating value and impact at the same time.”

This session reminded us that true leadership is not just about personal growth, but about building solutions that uplift others.

We remain grateful to Agnes for sparking this mindset shift among our trainers.

As part of the just-concluded PLED+ programme, our trainers had the privilege of learning from Omolola Lipede, who led the session on Design Thinking.

The session stood out for its hands-on approach as the trainers were not only introduced to the principles of design thinking but also challenged to apply them in solving real-life problems. This practical exposure later reflected in how our trainers guided students to think critically and creatively throughout the programme

We are truly grateful to Omolola Lipede for making design thinking come alive and for laying such a strong foundation for innovation within PLED+.
