Here are the 8 steps to raising self-esteem:
Step 1: Practice Self-Compassion
Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes. Treat yourself with the same kindness and care that you would offer to a friend. As meditation teacher Allan Lokos says, "Don't believe everything you think. Thoughts are just that — thoughts."
Step 2: Change Your Story
Focus on your strengths and accomplishments, and reframe your negative self-talk. Ask yourself, "Was there a time in your life where you had better self-esteem? What were you doing at that stage of your life?" According to psychotherapist Kristie Overstreet, recognizing your strengths can help boost your confidence.
Step 3: Avoid Comparison
Stop comparing yourself to others, as it can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Psychotherapist Kimberly Hershenson notes, "Comparisons only lead to negative self-talk, which leads to anxiety and stress."
Step 4: Set Achievable Goals
Setting and achieving small goals can help build confidence and self-esteem. Start with small, manageable steps, and celebrate your successes along the way. As Debbie Mandel, autho
Step 7: Forgive Yourself and Others
Holding onto grudges and negative emotions can weigh heavily on self-esteem. Practicing forgiveness can help you release pent-up resentment and anger. Consider repeating a forgiveness affirmation, such as "If I have hurt or harmed anyone, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask forgiveness."
Step 8: Trust in Your Worth
Recognize that your worth and potential are not defined by your circumstances. As psychologist Allison Abrams notes, "Low self-esteem is reversible." Focus on building a positive self-image by celebrating your strengths and accomplishments .
