πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father" (GALATIANS 1:4).*_

*In recent times, there has been a resurgence of the despicable trend of kidnapping for ransom in several countries around the world. This savagery has a long history. The greatest of such ransom was paid to the Spanish Conquistador (conqueror), Francisco Pizarro, and his band of invaders in 1532-3 for the release of captured Atahualpa, the last emperor of the Incas, at Cajamarca, Peru. The ransom consisted of filling a room with gold and two other rooms with silver up to the level of the Inca's reach. The total collection of gold and silver demanded by Pizarro and his men was enormous, amounting to nearly half a billion dollars in today's money.*

*More than 1,500 years before, the Lord Jesus Christ paid the ultimate ransom, not in gold or silver. Unlike the vile ransoms demanded by kidnappers and invaders, Christ gave Himself as ransom to redeem humanity from sin and its consequences. Apostle Paul pointed this out to the Galatian Christians from the outset of this epistle to douse the teaching of the Judaizers that was creeping into the church. Christ's ransom was also meant to deliver us from the demands of the Mosaic economy that consisted of rituals and ordinances as well as the corruption and misery of the present world. By shedding His blood and dying on the cross, Christ paid it all for us in keeping with God's will.*

*We no longer struggle to be free, knowing that it is futile. Every penitent sinner who places their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will receive pardon and power from God for a brand new life. He is translated from the power of darkness into the kingdom of His dear Son. No amount of religious zeal and self-righteousness can substitute for the ransom Christ paid for us. Therefore, anyone who desires to serve God but decides to avoid the route of repentance and faith in Christ remains condemned (Romans 3:23).*

*As the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ are mainly remembered worldwide this day, it is a perfect time to reflect on your stake in Him personally. Have you appropriated the benefit of His sacrificial and atoning death? Have you taken Him by faith as your Lord and Saviour?*

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia" (1 THESSALONIANS 1:7).*_

*We can only agree with Edith Wharton, the first woman to win the _Pulitzer Prize_ in Fiction, who observed, "There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it."*

*Our Lord Jesus Christ said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12). The church in Thessalonica reflected this light so much as to become an example to other believers in the whole region of Macedonia and Achaia. Apostle Paul and his companions (Silvanus and Timotheus) were glad to see the positive effect of the gospel preached by them in the lives of church members. The people received the gospel wholeheartedly and with conviction. They became followers of the ministers (sharing the same belief and conduct) even amid persecution and with Holy Spirit-inspired joy.*

*Producing such strong Christians does not happen by chance. In the case of the Thessalonian church, it started with the quality of the message they received and the ample work of the Holy Spirit among them. The gospel that Paul and his companions preached to them did not stem from mere wisdom of men marked by psychological and emotional manipulations. The pure gospel produced a significant change in their hearts and lives. Miraculous manifestations and Spirit-induced convictions followed, and they modelled the lifestyle of the ministers who taught them. The results are usually sound and exemplary Christians wherever these factors are present.*

*In these days of borderline Christianity, deception and self-delusion, it is necessary to examine our spiritual lives to ensure we are on the same page with God. Like the Thessalonian believers, we must embrace the gospel with all our hearts, not picking and choosing what tickles our fancy. We must seek the Lord sincerely and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us. We must stick with proven gospel ministers who demonstrate Christ's doctrines through their teaching and lifestyle. This is how we can become solid and exemplary Christians.*

*DO AS THE ROMANS DO?* πŸ“–πŸŽšοΈπŸ«΅πŸ½β“πŸ€”

πŸ“œπŸ“œ```TEXT:JOSHUA 22:1-10```πŸ“œπŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"But take diligent heed to... love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul" (JOSHUA 22:5).*_

*_"When in Rome, do as the Romans do,"_ is a saying attributed to Saint Ambrose centuries ago. A woman and her son consulted Ambrose when they planned to visit Rome. He told them the Romans observed Saturday as a fast day. Those who travelled to the city were also expected to comply with that culture. So, he advised the two to do as the Romans did. That led to the saying about following the way of the Romans when in their territory.*

*But there is a clear warning to followers of the Lord not to drop their Christian conduct for other practices as we move from place to place, either during missionary expeditions or in our secular engagements. The Reubenites, the Gadites, and half of the tribe of Manasseh were returning to the land allotted to them after faithfully helping to secure the territories of the other tribes. Joshua sternly admonished them not to drop their godly comportment for the sinful traditions of where they were heading. They must not do as the Romans do, as it were.*

*Changes in profession, residential addresses, or marital status must not be allowed to displace our love for the laws of Christ. As faithful believers, we are eternally bonded to Him and His commandments. These laws moderate our lifestyles, whether we are married or not and whether we reside in temperate or tropical regions. We are to be masters over these external conditions by putting Christ first in all that we do. In other words, we should be able to say, like the Apostle Paul, that we can do all things through Christ, who empowers us to overcome all circumstances.*

*Believers, therefore, must not apportion to themselves so-called comfort zones, where they become tin gods and are unreceptive to changes that immensely benefit the expansion of the Kingdom of God. We must be ready to conform to changes as the Spirit leads. We must welcome challenges as stepping stones to new territories to be conquered for our Master. And as we move, we must go with unflagging zeal demanded by the Lord.*

πŸ“œπŸ“œ```TEXT:JUDGES 14:1-4```πŸ“œπŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well" (JUDGES 14:3).*_

*Brazilians and many Africans devised a simple trap to catch monkeys. The trap is a gourd with a little hole cut on it. The hole is barely enough to allow a monkey's empty hand through. The gourd is tied to a tree branch and banana or roasted nuts are placed in it. The monkey comes around and puts its hand to take the bait, but cannot pull out the fist, clutching it. The monkey stubbornly persists, trying to pull out the banana or nut until the trap owner takes him alive. The monkey is trapped by what it loves and its stubbornness to get it at all costs.*

*Although Samson was a Nazarite, empowered by the Holy Spirit, he became entrapped by his lust for Philistine women. In the text, he was attracted to "a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines" who neither shared his faith nor his commitment to God. He decided to marry her despite God's prohibition of such a union and his parent's disapproval. Eventually, he was caught, bound, blinded, and mocked in an idol temple because of gratification of the flesh.*

*Satan enslaves people with the lust of the eyes, flesh and the pride of life. Many who claim to be saved and Spirit-filled get into bo***ge to immorality, are overpowered by materialism, envy, revenge and other works of the flesh. When you walk by sight rather than by faith or when you do what gratifies your decadent desires, even if it contradicts the revealed will of God, it becomes easy for the flesh to gain mastery over you.*

*As we near the end of the year, we must never forget that true freedom from the dominance of the flesh is in Christ. Yielding yourself to God, crucifying the flesh daily and walking in the Spirit are the ways out of the fleshly trap.*

✍🏽```THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:``` _*Look away from Satan's baits and you will escape his traps.*_

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (LUKE 18:16).*_

*It was a custom in Israel for mothers to present their children to the Jewish rabbis or teachers to bless them.*

*However, the disciples of Jesus thought this was inappropriate, because they felt He was too important or too busy to be bothered with little children. They were irritated that mothers kept coming to see Jesus with their children. To them, the children were not important enough to fill the already crowded schedule of the Lord Jesus Christ. On the face of it, these all sounded reasonable, but not to Jesus. When He realised what His disciples were doing to the children and their mothers, "He was much displeased" with them.*

*Christ instructed the disciples to allow little children to be brought to Him without hindrance. He explained to them that children, by their natural disposition, best portray the necessary characteristics befitting of the kingdom of God. They are innocent and without guile; trusting and obedient, and do not know what it means to be worried or anxious. He then stressed that anyone who desires to spend eternity with God must imbibe these necessary attributes of little children.*

*Christian parents should learn to deliberately introduce their children to Christ and encourage them to build and maintain a life-long relationship with Him. The church and leaders must devote sufficient time and resources to help develop these children in the way of the Lord. Again, believers should crave to imbibe the childlike attitudes of trust and faith in God. That way, they will gladly receive His word and freely follow His guidance. Like little children, we should be confident that God knows what is best for us and that He will give it to us in due course.*
