“Why is this so expensive?”

Sometimes, the question isn’t simply about the price. It’s about whether the customer understands what they’re getting for it.

Creative businesses don’t need to defend every price. But they do need to communicate their products clearly enough for customers to make an informed decision.

Take a look at your product pages: are you communicating the value, or just the price? Food for thought.

There’s a reason African craftsmanship feels different.

The pattern. The material. The technique. The way something is woven, shaped, carved or finished.

These details can tell us about where a piece comes from, the knowledge behind it, the materials available to its maker, and the hands that brought it to life.

The more you know about African craftsmanship, the more you realise there is rarely just one thing to see.
There’s always another detail worth noticing.

So, the next time you purchase from an African creative or brand, take a moment to appreciate the thinking, skill and process behind the craft.

A new product can be exciting, but excitement isn’t enough reason to launch it.

Before investing time and money into a new product, take a step back and ask whether the idea makes sense for both your customer and your business.

Use these five questions to pressure-test the idea before you launch.

Save this post and use it before your next product launch.🧡

Akwete is an Igbo handwoven textile from Akwete, Abia State, Nigeria, with a weaving tradition passed down through generations.

But what makes Akwete remarkable is not simply how it is woven. It is what is woven into it.

Its motifs carry meanings, memories, beliefs and stories.

Traditionally, designs could represent animals, people, objects, plants and ideas, turning the cloth itself into a form of visual storytelling.

Today, Akwete continues to evolve, with its distinctive patterns and visual language finding their way into contemporary design.

This is the story of Akwete: a textile where craft becomes culture, and culture becomes a language that continues to speak.

Being discovered is only the beginning.

If a customer finds your brand today, how easy is it for them to go from “I want this” to “I’ll buy this”?

Clear product information. Transparent pricing. Delivery details. Easy payment. A simple buying process.

The little points of friction can be the difference between interest and a purchase.

Take a few minutes to audit your customer journey. What might be stopping someone from buying from you?

Building a creative business takes more than making great work.

Over time, we’ve seen African creatives build incredible products and brands while navigating challenges that often have little to do with creativity itself.

Visibility matters. Community matters. Access matters. And so do the less visible parts of building a business: marketing, strategy, customer experience and consistency.

There is no single formula for building a successful creative business, but there are lessons worth paying attention to.
These are five we keep coming back to.

Which one are you learning right now?

Your price tells customers what you charge, your brand tells them what they’re paying for.

The quality of your product matters, but so does how customers experience it. Your story, presentation, craftsmanship, materials and overall brand experience all shape how they perceive its value.

This doesn’t mean creating a story to justify a price. It means making the value that already exists in your work easier to see.

Before changing your price, ask yourself: have I communicated the value clearly enough?

We don’t talk enough about the opportunities Artificial Intelligence creates.

For creative businesses, AI can take some of the repetitive work off your plate without taking away the creativity, skill or craft behind what you make.

Using AI to support your workflow does not make your work any less handmade. It simply gives you another tool to work smarter and create more room for what matters.

Your creativity is the asset. AI is the tool.

What part of your creative business would you love to make easier?
