Our Story
ActionAid Nigeria is part of ActionAid International; a global movement of people working together to further human rights for all and defeat poverty. It was established in 1972 in the United Kingdom and commenced operations in Nigeria in 1999 through a Country Agreement signed with the National Planning Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We work in over 45 countries across the world and have a ‘bottom up’ approach to decision making. Our head office is in South Africa because it is important to us that the people whose lives we support and who we work with feel connected to us. Most of all, we believe people in poverty have the power within them to create change for themselves, their families and communities. ActionAid is a catalyst for that change. Our vision: A world without poverty and injustice in which every person enjoys their right to a life of dignity. Our Mission: To work with poor and excluded people to eradicate poverty and injustice. How we work: We take a ‘rights based’ approach to the eradication of poverty. We believe poverty exists mainly because people have been denied certain basic rights. So whilst we make interventions such as building schools, primary health centres or even providing portable water based on a ‘needs assessment’ conducted with full participation of members of the community, we go further to build the capacity of the communities we work with to successfully hold their duty bearers to account in order to ensure the sustainability of such interventions, such as for instance, making provision for the daily running of the schools/health centres we provided in subsequent LG/State budgets. We collaborate with state agencies and support them in delivering on their obligations to citizens, especially the poor and socially disadvantaged. We call the attention of relevant government organs to policy gaps, build the capacity of both state and non-state actors to plug those gaps as well as propose and advocate for alternatives where necessary. Why Community Sponsorship? Our Community Sponsorship initiative provides the opportunity to well meaning people like you to get a greater sense that they are actually making a difference by making small contributions to help poor rural communities in Nigeria overcome poverty and live a life of dignity. It is a great opportunity for Nigerians to work through an organization that has a global reputation for the highest levels of transparency and accountability, as well as a reputation for delivering high impact poverty eradication programs all over the world. By tapping into the vast mobilizing strength of Africa’s traditional communal approach to development and her indefatigable spirit of giving, ActionAid Nigeria believes Nigerians themselves can support less fortunate communities out of poverty and create a more balanced and secure society for all. With your support, ActionAid Nigeria is better able to support poor communities in accessing the rights that they have been denied. Simple things like the rights to quality public education, primary public health care, food, right to stay on their land, up to having a say in the decisions that shape their lives. More often than not, the inability to access such basic services leads to a lifetime of hardship and poverty. You can help change this. Together we can defeat poverty and injustice in Nigeria and the world.
