Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah . Tune : Guide Me

Through every wilderness, God remains our Guide. Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah beautifully echoed the spirit of thanksgiving and renewed commitment at the 2026 Rededication and Thanksgiving Service of the DMGS Onitsha Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch, held at Church of the Nativity, Parkview, Ikoyi.

A hymn praying and aspiring for divine guidance ."Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah" is one of the most beloved hymns of Christian pilgrimage and dependence on God. The text was written by William Williams Pantycelyn (1717โ€“1791), the great Welsh hymn writer and preacher, often regarded as the "Sweet Singer of Wales." Originally written in Welsh, the hymn draws heavily on the biblical journey of the Israelites through the wilderness, with God providing guidance, protection, and sustenance.

The hymn's imagery of the believer as a pilgrim travelling through a difficult wilderness makes it especially relevant to life's journey. Its famous prayer, "Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more," reflects God's provision, while its confidence in divine guidance echoes Exodus 13:21, where God led Israel by a pillar of cloud and fire.

The familiar English translation is associated with Peter Williams (1727โ€“1796) and later revisions, which helped introduce the hymn to the English-speaking Church. The tune commonly known as GUIDE ME was composed by John Hughes (1872โ€“1914) and has become inseparably associated with the hymn in Welsh and wider Christian worship.

The hymn also speaks beautifully to the realities of life and death. Psalm 23:4 reminds us, "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." It is a prayer that God will guide us not only through life's challenges but safely into His eternal presence.

This inspiring hymn was rendered during the 2026 Rededication and Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos Branch of the Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha Old Boys Association, held on 7th June 2026 at the Church of the Nativity, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos.For generations of DMGS old boys, it became a fitting prayer of thanksgiving: May the God who guided us in the past continue to lead us into the future.

O God, Our Help in Ages Past. St Anne.

"Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations." Psalm 90:1. May we never forget the God who has guided us through the past, sustained us in the present, and holds our future securely in His hands.

Generations change, memories remain, but God is our help in every age. A beautiful rendering of O God, Our Help in Ages Past at the 2026 Rededication and Thanksgiving Service of the DMGS Onitsha Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch, held at Church of the Nativity, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos.

This hymn of gratitude and enduring faith "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" is one of the great hymns of Christian faith and thanksgiving. The text was written by Isaac Watts (1674โ€“1748) and published in 1719 as a paraphrase of Psalm 90, the prayer of Moses celebrating God's eternal nature and His faithfulness through generations.

Watts transformed the Psalm into a powerful Christian confession: though human life is brief and time passes like a dream, God remains our refuge, hope, and help from generation to generation. The hymn is therefore especially fitting for occasions of thanksgiving, anniversaries, rededications, and moments of remembrance.

The familiar tune ST. ANNE is attributed to William Croft (1678โ€“1727), an English composer and organist. Its dignified melody has made the hymn one of the most enduring congregational songs in Anglican worship.

The message beautifully echoes Psalm 90:1โ€“2: "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations." It also reminds us of the brevity of life and the certainty of God's eternal care: "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8).

This beloved hymn was rendered during the 2026 Rededication and Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos Branch of the Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha Old Boys Association, held on 7th June 2026 at the Church of the Nativity, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos.
