Sometime February, 2025, CRACO paid a visit to the Juvenile Welfare Center, Mushin. One of the complaints we received from the Center was that some part of the building was damaged and dilapidated and as such not conducive for habitation of children. CRACO promised to help them fix the damaged and dilapidated parts of the building. Last week CRACO fulfilled it's promise.

Nigerian Government should stop violating the right of children to the dignity of their human persons

Section 11 of the Child’s Rights Act guarantees dignity of the child.

It states that, “Every child is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly, no child shall be ‐ (a) subjected to physical, mental or emotional injury, abuse, neglect or maltreatment, including s*xual abuse; (b) subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Bad governance led to severe hunger in the land, and children came into the street to protest. They were arrested since August, 2024, and are today, the 1st of November, 2024, being prosecuted for their alleged role in the protests. If they are just being arraigned three months later, one can only imagine the sort of dehumanizing conditions they had been subjected to during their long detention. It's not surprising that some of them had to faint inside courtroom, perhaps out of the same hunger that led to their protest. So, even under their custody, the government still cannot feed these children. Which way Nigeria?

This is a government that is supposed to take the protection of children's rights as it's priority, but alas, the same government is the one dehumanizing the children, and violating their fundamental rights. The rights of the child must be respected by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

If this is true, then it's not only wrong but unlawful. It amounts to discrimination against children and a violation of their fundamental human rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution and Child Rights Act, 2003. Section 42(2) of the Constitution forbids subjecting a Nigerian citizen to any form of deprivation merely by reason of the circumstances of his birth. Section 10(1) of the Child Rights Act, 2003, states that: A child shall not be subjected to any form of discrimination merely by reason of his belonging to a particular community or ethnic group or by reason of his place of origin, s*x, religion or political opinion ".

Thus, subjecting a child to discrimination by reason of the fact that he belongs to a community of divorced parents infringes on the right of the child. It is unlawful and unacceptable. Any school that has such illegal policy, is indeed not a good school, and such school is advised and cautioned to immediately desist from such, or face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, any person that knows this particular school in Lekki or any such school should contact CRACO at [email protected].

Today we were at OXVILLE SCHOOL, Meiran, Lagos state, to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child with the beautiful and brilliant students of the school. The theme for this year's commemoration is "Girls' Vision For the Future". International Day of the Girl Child is marked every year to recognize girls'rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. CRACO distributed enlightenment flyers to the students and donated different books to the school for the girls.

How vigilant are you over your children?

This is a driver sent to drop off a female kid in the school. A six year old girl. Any time the driver dropped the kid, he would request for a kiss from the little girl.

One day, the driver was absent from work and the father decided to drop her in the school. Immediately she came down from the car the father waved her goodbye; but the little girl was not pleased with the greeting. The father now called her and asked her what was the matter. She said, "I like brother Emeka. Anytime he dropped me, he used to kiss me and suck my tongue." Her father reply, "Don't worry, next time I drop you, I'll do the same thing."

The father then sent someone to monitor them and take this photograph.

CRACO AT RABBI MODEL COLLEGE , IFO, OGUN STATE

Child s*xual abuse and boundary violations often come from people we know and trust. Educate your children on stranger danger, but also be very diligent about your trusted circle of adults and teach your children about healthy personal boundaries. Talk to them early and often.

We appreciate Rabbi Model College Ifo Ogun state for inviting us to their school to sensitize their students on child abuse identification, prevention skills and reporting. In the light of the increasing rate of child s*xual abuse in the society today, schools are encouraged to make this type of education part of their curriculum.

Two weeks ago we received a complaint from a concerned mother that a 10-year old boy s*xually abused her 7-year old girl in the school bus while the driver was taking them home. Who should take the blame for this - the parents who entrusted their child into the care of the school? The little boy who is still a minor? The Driver who was focused on driving for the safety of the children or the school that put children in the bus without an attendant/supervision?

This is to let you know how bad the situation has become, so much so that even children now abuse themselves. Never entrust your child into the care of anyone without supervision. We have gotten to a stage where everyone is now a suspect. Even the supervisor should be supervised. We should remember the supervisor in one of the big schools in Lagos state that s*xually abused a 2-year old child. He is still serving his prison term.

Even parents need supervision as news of some fathers s*xually abusing their female children is common these days. As such, the best supervision in the present circumstance is to empower the children to understand what s*xual abuse is, when they are being s*xually abused, and how to protect and defend themselves, especially the urgent need to report, how and where to report.
Let’s work together to protect children. We are ready.
