A new analysis from the AfriMed Observatory is now out.

💧 Water is more than a natural resource, it is a strategic asset.

As climate change intensifies water scarcity, competition over shared resources is becoming an increasingly important driver of regional tensions. The dispute over Ethiopia's Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) shows how environmental change, historical agreements and geopolitical interests intersect in one of Africa's most significant transboundary conflicts.

This analysis explores the Nile Basin dispute through the lenses of international water law, hydro-hegemony and regional security, highlighting why water insecurity has become a critical challenge for stability across the Horn of Africa and beyond.

A new Afrimed Observatory analysis is out 🔍🌍✨

Ten years into Yemen's war, the first half of 2026 has redrawn the country's political map, without resolving the tensions underneath it.

In January, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) announced its dissolution after a failed military offensive in Hadhramaut and al-Mahra, strengthening the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) but leaving southern secessionism fragmented rather than defeated. A newly enlarged government under PM al-Zindani passed the state's first budget in seven years and held its first IMF consultation in over a decade; yet remains financially and politically dependent on Saudi Arabia 💰

Meanwhile, the Houthis have played a double game: consolidating power at home, resuming missile strikes on Israel to preserve their standing within the Axis of Resistance, and negotiating with Riyadh through Omani channels. That parallel track produced, on 14 May, the release of over 1,600 conflict-related detainees, the largest prisoner exchange of the entire war 🔄🕊️

Behind these developments lies a wider regional variable: the Iran-US-Israel confrontation ⚠️ and the growing Saudi-UAE rivalry over who shapes Yemen’s future.

None of this amounts to peace. It amounts to a rebalancing of power among actors consolidating their own positions rather than building a shared one, leaving Yemen’s stability, for now, only apparent ⚖️🔥
