The meeting which was presided over by the Hon. Minister of Environment who was first represented by the Director, Environmental Impact Assessment Department and later represented by a Senior Officer at the Federal Ministry of Environment is to ensure that all developmental projects are carried out in compliance with relevant environmental laws and, regulations order to ensure environmental sustainability.

The proposed power project is embarked upon by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Lagos in order to reduce their overdependence on fossil fuels thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The proposed project aims to address the challenges faced by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Lagos plant’s reliance on standalone diesel and gas-powered generators, which are expensive to operate due to the cost of fuel and maintenance. It also aims to connect the proposed power plant to the national grid in order to ensure a more reliable and secure energy source and align with global sustainability goals by reducing carbon emission.

As a host community, relevant questions were raised on all fronts by His Royal Majesty, through the Youth President. The Panel which was chaired by Dr. Vincent Dogo, an Electrical Engineering expert with nearly five decades experience asked for clarification on grey areas and also proffer solutions to technical challenges arising from the proposal. The Federal Ministry of Environment also focused on the environmental sustainability of the project, taking into consideration the aspects of the proposed power project that is exposed to the public and the other aspects that is away from the public eyes but has major impacts on the public.

It is pertinent to state that the project is still a proposal and is undergoing serious environmental scrutiny as required by extant laws and regulations. Environmental compliance and other relevant approvals are being monitored and sought after before the commencement of the project.

SCOPING WORKSHOP ON THE PROPOSED CALAMITY TANK AND FIRE WATER TANK PROJECT AT THE HEADQUARTER OF THE NIGERIAN BREWERIES PLC, IGANMU

On thursday, 11th December, 2025, the parent body for all youth platforms in Ijora Kingdom, the Ijora Oloye Youths Association, sent a delegation led by the Vice President, Comrade Ahmed Olamide Banjo alongside a vibrant member, Comrade Oluwasegun Wahab Ogunlade, to the Scoping Workshop for the proposed Calamity Tank and Fire Water Tank for the Nigerian Breweries Plc at the Creative Workspace, 1st Floor, Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Mall.

The meeting which was presided over by the representative of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Kehinde Tinuade, was to ensure that all developmental projects go through the rigorous yet compulsory phases of environmental scrutiny in accordance with the extant environmental laws of the federation and in compliance with regulations order to ensure environmental sustainability.

The proposed Calamity Tank and Fire Water Tank project is embarked upon by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Lagos in order to have a centralised water system prepared for any unforeseen fire outbreak within the premises of the Nigerian Breweries Plc. More importantly, the proposed project aims to minimise the damage and prevent fatal casualties in the event of any unsuspecting fire emergency. This will corroborate the efforts of relevant fire fighting services in the prevention and control of fire situations. It is pertinent to state that the company is taking a bold step to prepare the ground for her power distribution infrastructure which was proposed a couple of months ago by building a calamity and firewater tank in the case of any spark from the power project when it comes to life.

Presentation on the environmental impact was done by a representative of Jawura Environmental Health Services, Mr. Wasiu Adeleke where he addressed the impact the project has on the environment. The environmental impact assessment laid to bear, the various impacts and disruption the project may cause. It also sheds light on the source of water and how the host communities and neighbouring organisations on the axis may be affected.

The tanks according to the company will be built by qualified engineers from the company's Engineering Department and will be domiciled in the premises of the company. The youth delegation led by the Vice President of the Ijora Oloye Youths Association, Comrade Banjo, asked thought provoking questions, especially questions on measures put in place to ensure swift response to fire emergencies, peradventure the project is given a green light. At the end of the scoping workshop, it was established that community engagement on solid and liquid waste management as well as community safety should be prioritised.

As an institutional stakeholder in Ijora Kingdom concerned with the welfare, progress and development of the Youth populace and the Ijora Kingdom community, we are closely monitoring the projects, the environmental compliance and ensuring relevant approvals are sought and gotten before the commencement of these projects.
