The meeting which was presided over by the Hon. Minister of Environment who was first represented by the Director, Environmental Impact Assessment Department and later represented by a Senior Officer at the Federal Ministry of Environment is to ensure that all developmental projects are carried out in compliance with relevant environmental laws and, regulations order to ensure environmental sustainability.
The proposed power project is embarked upon by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Lagos in order to reduce their overdependence on fossil fuels thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The proposed project aims to address the challenges faced by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Lagos plant’s reliance on standalone diesel and gas-powered generators, which are expensive to operate due to the cost of fuel and maintenance. It also aims to connect the proposed power plant to the national grid in order to ensure a more reliable and secure energy source and align with global sustainability goals by reducing carbon emission.
As a host community, relevant questions were raised on all fronts by His Royal Majesty, through the Youth President. The Panel which was chaired by Dr. Vincent Dogo, an Electrical Engineering expert with nearly five decades experience asked for clarification on grey areas and also proffer solutions to technical challenges arising from the proposal. The Federal Ministry of Environment also focused on the environmental sustainability of the project, taking into consideration the aspects of the proposed power project that is exposed to the public and the other aspects that is away from the public eyes but has major impacts on the public.
It is pertinent to state that the project is still a proposal and is undergoing serious environmental scrutiny as required by extant laws and regulations. Environmental compliance and other relevant approvals are being monitored and sought after before the commencement of the project.
