Are you passionate? Yes.
Are you speaking? Yes.

But can they actually understand you?

This is what passion without proper storytelling looks like.

Let’s talk about this.

I don’t know how many of you go through this, but it feels like the moment people hear “NGO”, they assume you have a shipload of money.

Suddenly, every conversation comes with a silent expectation, that you should "drop something," fund this, pay for that, or give beyond your means. As if running a nonprofit equals having endless resources.

Truth is, many of us are bootstrapping our work, pouring in our time, energy, and even personal savings just to keep the mission alive. We’re building from scratch, solving real problems, and stretching every naira.

It gets exhausting, not just the work, but the assumptions.

So if you're navigating this too, just know you're not alone. Keep your head down, stay focused, and protect your mission. Every kobo matters. Every act of service counts. Even when it’s misunderstood.

The things that don’t make it to the impact reports…

Most days, it’s not just the work — it’s the journey to the work.

Hours spent commuting. Money spent out of pocket. Long walks under the sun, because true impact doesn’t wait for convenience.

In the beginning, I used to carry my baby along — because sometimes, that’s what mission looks like. But eventually, I realized it wasn’t fair on him. The sun, the stress, the endless motion. So now, I wake up before dawn, drop him off, and begin the journey again.

Impact work isn’t just about programs and photos. It’s about sacrifice. It’s choosing to show up, even when no one is clapping. Because the people we serve deserve more than distant good intentions — they deserve presence.

This is the part of the story I don’t always share. But it’s real. And it matters.

Last week marked the end of an incredible journey with the Alliance for Women and Girls Programe , which I joined through the Her Africa Early Stage Incubation Program (HAESI).

Over the past six months, I had the privilege of learning alongside powerful women working with women and girls across different African countries. From inspiring facilitators, close-knit breakout rooms, mentorship sessions, to the impact buddy structure, every part of the experience helped me grow, connect, and dream bigger.

During this time, I also had the amazing opportunity to be spotlighted twice to share my impact story, one of those times was before the AFWAG board.

Beyond the learning, I gained sisters and friends who made this journey even more special. One of them is my impact buddy, Mary, to think she’s all the way in Kenya, yet every time we speak, it feels like we’re just a few streets apart.

The program wrapped up with a beautiful graduation ceremony and I’m humbled to share that I received the Spark Award, given to the participant most likely to start a movement.

I’m grateful for this journey, the friendships formed, the lessons learned, and the doors it has opened. We keep growing, learning and moving!

We’re launching the Alherin Yara Project

We are identifying 10 children in an under-resourced primary school to support with:

- Nutritious meals
- Books and pens
- Family empowerment

We meet urgent needs today and work with these families to create long-term solutions, ensuring every child’s future is brighter and stronger.

This isn’t just about relief. It’s about real, lasting change.

Join us in planting hope that grows for generations.
